Solidly built, good optics, an assembly manual would've been helpful

I just put the scope together (correctly, I hope) and so far it seems like an excellent microscope for the price. It's heavy and solidly built, so using it with a similarly heavy DSLR camera should pose no problems. My only complaint (like others, here) is taht AmScope's instruction manual (and parts list) is pathetic. The company would be doing everyone a favor (their customers and their customer service employees) if they included scope-specific instructions (and parts lists) with their instruments. The booklet that was shipped with this microscope was a generic one-size-fits-all pamphlet that was of little to no use in assembling this particular piece of equipment.
Additional comment (edited review): It's odd that AmScope doesn't ship a decent manual with their microscopes (and other products), but the manuals are available on the website or by phone. The website downloads apparently require a specific code that's purportedly sent with the item (I've purchased two microscopes and a camera, and none came with the download code), but the customer service folks are very friendly and seem happy to e-mail the product manuals. My advice would be to get the manual prior to assembling the scopes, particularly the more elaborate scopes (the compound scopes are relatively self-explanatory, and don't have many pieces). Who knows why this company (which produces very nice scopes for extraordinarily reasonable prices) is so tight-fisted with their manuals, but it's a good idea to get them one way or another.

Good but not great

Decent but definitely get what you pay for. The focus knob is gritty, the finish is a bit rough on parts, and the light is not so great. Don't misunderstand this - it is quite useable and the optics are clear and easy to focus. Something I didn't find anywhere else: there is a rod to pull to block the left eyepiece and activate the camera port - IT IS NOT A SIMUL-FOCUS SCOPE. I didn't think it was going in and I don't really need it, but it should be better explained. If you need simultaneous focus, spend the (little) extra money and get the 4NTP model and a better light unless you truly need the 90x magnification this one has.

This high quality trinocular microscope will allow me to restart repair work on the electrcal project that caused me to buy this microscope - a read/write head from a '60s magnetic tape drive! Now I can *see* what I'm trying to do at home instead of having to take it to work on a Saturday. And I'll eventually add a camera to the third "eyepiece" too, to document what I'm doing.

Awesome build quality, excellent optical quality. This is a good tool for visual PCB inspection and rework, but I recommend getting their USB camera option to avoid hunching over the eyepiece. Even with the camera, it's a lot cheaper than a Mantis.
