A really good radio app
Chris J✓ Verified Purchase•September 20, 2023
I tried other radio apps on the Android market but TuneIn is the best I've come across. It has a bunch of radio stations the others didn't have including some HD radio! Pod cast shows and internet stations are a welcome treat too. It even has local police scanner channels which is a little weird to have but interesting.
I do have a problem with the interface however using the app via my OG Droid. The wording is clear and informative but on the smallish side. When in landscape mode the TuneIn bar in the top of the screen is too thick, as well as the bar on the bottom that shows the play/pause/timer status. The rest of the info is pinched into a small area. On the left side is the station info, which is too small, and on the right are options that can really should be brought up on a different accessable menu screen. This setup isn't driver friendly where I use the app most of the time. Maybe a "car mode" should be called for where one could see the station's info and access some of your presets on one screen. As it stands now I have to go back one or two screens to see my presets. Not good when driving.
Still overall the app is one of the best radio apps on the market. A winner it is.
Update 7/27/12
Looks like the evil Clear Channel got greedy and took some of the stations away from TuneIn for their iheartradio service, which I'm not a fan of. Since I listen to only a few stations most of the time, I didn't notice the missing stations, which was done a while ago, but still, TuneIn has way more stations and content. They added a well needed car dock in the mean time which is good, but I would still like to see most of the stations I favor as big icons one screen rather than small lines of call letters.

Good app, but one flaw keeps it from 4-5 star status (UPDATE!)

You will like this app, and it is useful, but the one flaw I have found is that it will freeze at times and the only way to recover is to go into your applications management and force it to close. Then you can reopen it. I have not found the battery issue someone else mentioned, but I suspect that it is still open in the background for that user, which is related to the issue I mentioned.
To give you a specific example, I have used this to stream audio from 8am to 5pm, 5 days a week, and once each day it freezes. This seems to coincide with other android functions, like if you get a phone call, or if your tablet display goes to "sleep". When you wake the screen, this app doesn't recover about 60% of the time, so you will have to restart it.
That said, if you want the ability to listen to thousands of radio stations, you will like this app. I do recommend it even with the issues of freezing occasionally. Even on 3G connections, it works. I have tested this on a tablet and on a phone, and both work just as well. It does record audio extremely well. I don't have any problem recording, even talk shows that are 3 hours long. You can choose favorites, and if you are looking for specific shows, it will list them and then every stream available for you to try. A LOT of features in this little app.
Bottom line: this is the best streaming app available, and even with the occasional freezing issue, (which I think is more an Android issue then an app specific issue), this is worth your money. I don't want to over emphasize the freezing issue over the great functionality of this app. On both phone and tablet the volume is great, it resizes and looks GREAT on the tablet by the way, and will impress others.
UPDATE: Newer versions don't seem to have a freezing problem. Now raised my review. Excellent app.

A good radio app, especially for travel

I like TuneIn Radio on both my phone and on my Kindle Fire. It's a simple app that allows you to listen to news programming throughout the world. I mostly use it on road trips so that I can listen to my local NPR station or sports. Listening to my own NPR rather than finding a station while I am driving allows me to remember the schedule and I do not have to worry about leaving the coverage area. In addition, if there is a particular show I want to listen to it is easy to use TuneIn to find it. I have even used the TuneIn app on my television to listen to college football games that I can't find on t.v. They have pretty much any game you want.
They have tons of channels that are sure to please any music fan. Want to listen to an Egyptian pop station? It's yours. Want to listen to talk radio from Ottawa? Yep. You can even listen to channels that are not available on radio. There are apparently three streaming NPR stations in my area, only one of which is on the radio.
My only real issue with TuneIn Radio Pro is the search function. Sometimes it works fine. Search for a particular program and you are likely to find it. It is tougher when you want to search for a specific event (e.g., a specific ballgame). You often have to browse to such games rather than being able to search for them. That part can be annoying, as it should be much easier to find a program through search. Finally, for reasons that I cannot figure out, it pops up when there is an Ohio State football game. Why it thinks I am an Ohio State fan is beyond me, but it makes me uncomfortable and embarrassed when it pops up around other people. One person even accused me of being a secret Buckeye. Gross, dude.

Listening to radio has never been more fun!

Throw out that old FM/AM radio you have because TuneIn has so much more to offer. There are so many stations from which to choose even from around the world, where ever you are. I think apps are connecting us to the world like never before, and this helps that. Are all the stations in your area not interesting at the moment? Is there a big game to which you want to listen that's not local? No problem! This gives you everything to listen to the radio in style. You can even pause live radio.
Pro vs. Free: 7.5/10
First, I'll tell you about the Pro version, something you don't get on tunein.com on the PC...interesting. This adds two great features: no ads and recording stations. If you ask me, banners should not even be in the free app because stations already play ads, so this takes care of that. The recording feature is astounding because you can just tap record and listen to songs, podcasts, and talk shows over and over again. It is very convenient. On the other hand, at $5, it's expensive.
Audio Quality: 7/10
I also like the audio quality in the app. It's excellent and you don't have to worry about static at all. The audio is good and it doesn't cut out at all. However, the audio is delayed and I can't stand it. I love the app, but it is about 1 minute or more behind.
Extra Cool Features
If you like songs you hear, you can just tap the Amazon MP3 logo to buy them or buy them on other services. The car mode is nice. You can see an easy and basic view while driving with the same buttons you see on the car radio. TuneIn Live: 10/10 Okay, they somehow made this app so much better. You can see categories of music and more on the radio and stations that play good music. This app can actually tell you that. Awesome! This really lets you know what's good and new on the radio. It is also a snap to get to each section of the app with an intuitive design. Each section is right there, side-by-side.
Pros
+ No Ads
+ Good audio quality
+ Record stations
+ TuneIn Live
+ Amazing selection of stations and podcasts
+ Car mode
+ Intuitive design
Cons
- Price
- Delayed Broadcast
Overall, this is one of those apps that you are just going use every day without thinking about it. TuneIn brings us more radio anywhere, which is superb.

I have loved this app for years, but it has stopped working on Amazon apps especially on Kindles!
