They were dead and they had a foul smell.
effective bait for trout - just put on hook head first

I usually use lures, but when trout get lazy in the afternoon at the river or man made pond/lake I often fish, I tried Super Worms on a couple of occasions and the 1 to 5 lb rainbows in those places suddenly got peckish.
About the only problem I've had with them is that they tend to fall off the hook after a couple of casts IF you do not put them onto the hook head first.
BTW, their wax worm product also works well.
One last thing: make sure to keep the can cold once you've opened it (keep in the fridge or, when fishing, put the can in a bag the bottom of which you put under the water). Good luck
