DO NOT PURCHASE FOR AIR-TIGHT FOOD STORAGE! Progressive claims that these canisters are airtight; they are not! I am an avid baker and cook and purchased this canister in addition to the Keeper set along with several individual pieces in July 2017 for my different organic flours, sugars, baking soda, baking powder, chocolate chips and other baking ingredients. I just discovered that a bag of rice I had purchased from WalMart was contaminated with pantry moths which has had devastating effects on my pantry including the paper items; I had never heard of these before--what a nightmare! While sorting through food to discard, I was dismayed to discover the moths and their cocoons were inside of EVERY ONE of these canisters! It's not as if one seal failed; EVERY ONE OF THEM WAS CONTAMINATED!!! I discarded all the containers with the contents. I hate to think how much money was wasted on both the containers and the food by relying on their claims. I'm again searching for airtight storage containers but this time I will test their claims. This was a very expensive lesson that I won't repeat.

I bought this in 2014 but didn't use it right away, I guess I began to use it in 2015 with no problem, seemed to work as expected. In early 2017 I bought a new bag of brown sugar and placed it in the container, re-wetting the stone and placing it back on the rubber holder on the top. Last night I opened the container and the disk was all moldy with black spots, the rubber where the disk is stored has begun to disintegrate and crack. It too, was moldy and 'hairy'. My mistake, perhaps, was to put the wet disk back on the holder rather than on top or in the middle of the sugar. Since the mold has grown and the rubber is disintegrating. just the thought of using it with a new bag of sugar is... ugh. Debating whether to use it again, the mold is disgusting. I am not pleased with the hinged lid, also. I love the Sistema storage containers with separate lids and two lock clasps which I use for flour and powdered sugar. I bought this Progressive brand specifically for brown sugar. I consider it a bad purchase now.

So far, so good. They are large enough for a full bag of flour, although I'm not sure you could put the bag in the container because of the leveler attachment. In fact it's because of the leveler I only gave it 4 stars, as the edge sits a little closer to the side of the container than is convenient. If you are using a larger measuring device, you might not be able to scrape the whole top to level without tipping either what you're using, or the container. Either way I'm afraid that might be asking for a mess. Be careful when scooping out your flour, or use something else to level with, and you should have no trouble. The lid appears to seal tightly, so I don't anticipate any issues with a possible bug problem. I would just make sure, from time to time, to clean out the channel of the lid. Otherwise, happy cooking.

So far so good. I was sick of having to dig the brown sugar out of the package and it spilling everywhere and making my hands a mess, so this was a great solution.
The instructions on the terra cotta insert are to soak it for 15 minutes and then insert it INTO the Brown Sugar, so I am not sure why it has a place to attach it to the lid, maybe this is part of some peoples problem with there brown sugar getting hard. You do need to re soak it I believe every 3 months it says on instructions to keep it moist. It does only hold 2 lbs of brown sugar so in my opinion a little to small to hold regular sugar, but no real reason to why you cannot use it for this. The lid does snap hard so make sure you do close it all the way. The bottom of mine has a triangle with the number 7.

This thing is great! Usually I don't go through a whole bag of brown sugar very quickly, and I have to be super meticulous about pushing aaaaaall the air out and wrapping it up, then double bagging it with a double seal ziplock bag to try and keep it fresh. It's a hassle, and time consuming especially when I'm in a hurry.
I saw this while browsing storage containers one day and decided to give it a try. Why not, right?? I'm so thrilled!! I've had the same bag of brown sugar in this container for a few months now, since April to be exact, and it's still just as moist and wonderful as the day I dumped it in! I only put in one bag of brown sugar but it could easily hold 2 I firmly believe. The terra cotta piece in the lid helps keep the sugar from clumping and keeps it nice and perfect! I plan on buying more of this brand of storage containers for flour, white sugar, rice, the works! If it works this well on finicky brown sugar then I am a believer that the other canisters will work awesome as well!
