I bought these for my fish tank and they look really modern. Under LED lighting they look like $1,000,000. I saw they're from my hometown in FL!!
Ammonia Levels Spiked
Amazon Customer•April 7, 2017
I don't believe these stones are meant for an aquarium. My ammonia levels spiked off the charts when I put them in my tank. Months went by where I struggled to figure out why my ammonia levels would not come down, regardless of treatment and water changes/cleanings. I finally took the rocks out because they don't look as nice as I thought and are too light, so they would drift across the tank. Within days of removing the stones, my ammonia levels finally dropped. As an experiment, I placed some of the stones (I cleaned them first) into their own container of clean water and then tested the water after a few hours. Sure enough, ammonia was present in the water. I do not recommend these stones for aquarium use.
Black Gravel had Strong Chemical Odor, Extensive Rinsing Required
Suspended Moments•March 8, 2017
I purchased three different colors of aquarium gravel from this company and all seemed fine.
This review is specifically regarding the JET BLACK Pure Water Pebbles marked: S1 DEC 28 2016
I purchased a large and small bag of this black gravel. I selected it because of the fact that this gravel is specifically for aquariums and marked non-toxic. I put it in a 54-gallon fresh water tropical fish tank.
I rinsed it again and again prior to placing in the tank. Even after many cycles of rinsing, black/gray water still ran over my hands when holding the gravel for inspection. The other thing is the smell, very strong odor, not noticed in any other aquarium gravel from the same company. In order to get the smell to go away, this gravel required many cycles of rinsing and flushing.
I did finally place this gravel in my aquarium, though reluctantly, as I was still concerned about the smell and continuous faint inky rinse water when holding the damp gravel.
Ok, so now, I get it, the rocks are not naturally black and are coated heavily in order to make the gravel black. The package states that the "coating" is 100% Acrylic and Colorfast as well as non-toxic. I also understand that being gravel, lots of rubbing and bumping together goes on inside the package, that's why we rinse the gravel. I did not expect the smell and abundance of black rinse water even after several cycles.
I'm sorry to say that I personally would not recommend this gravel for your aquarium, specifically the black. I did like the natural colored gravel and obviously had no problems rinsing clean right away.
Look for a non-smelly alternative. Consider other colors.
