The first set was loved by the older child & we wanted to do ...

This is the second set we've bought for our house. The first set was loved by the older child & we wanted to do more experiments now that the younger child is getting into "rocks & minerals" stage of learning... The guide and corresponding numbers are on each specimen. There's more information in the booklet as well. I'd recommend purchasing another book to go along with this is you're buying it for a kid. Plus, when the kids get too tired of it...mom still likes the rocks too! They are very pretty and they could easily be placed in a jar or something for display as well. As for now, each kid likes to keep theirs all sorted out and staring at them.

We bought the little streak test kit to go with this. We've tested for hardness & also seeing what the streak colors could be on the black streak plate, white streak plate, and glass. It's a little kit here on Amazon too. It comes with a magnet, nail, penny well.
Excellent rock speciman variety, but the specimans are too small.

This rock sample set provides a good collection of samples. It has many standard rocks that can be used for comparison and learning opportunities. The case organizes and holds the rocks nicely. It comes with a great rock guide and key for identifying the rocks. I also have no concern about the identification labels coming off of the specimens as they are well attached.

The one down side is that the rock specimens are very small. Some are chocking hazards for younger children. It is also hard to really examine and see rock grains and details.

I would love to have this same set with larger rock samples.
My students like to explore

I use this in my classroom (3rd grade) of 25 students. The guide is helpful and all number stickers have stayed put after being passed through many small hands. My students like to explore, classify, and sort these. They are a nice manageable size. I would recommend this for a classroom teacher studying rocks and minerals. I set up a "lab" where the students had to guess the categories (sedimentary, igneous, metamorphic, minerals, ores, and gemstones.) The students had a great time and learned quite a bit.
A great starter kit for kids!

Great collection for younger children. My 12 year old son asked for a "rock collection" for a gift. I picked this one out because it seemed to have a good amount of specimens, that he can compare to commonly found rocks in our area. This prompted him to put down his video games, and actually go outside and look for matching stones he could identify. He was able to locate several, and is always looking for more.
These stones are also loose, and can be picked up and handled by the kids, allowing them to get a better feel and appreciation for them. Other sets have stones "mounted" or glued to a backing, which doesn't seem to be as much fun.
A good value for an interested child.
Great Rock ID kit for Earth Science classes!

I teach all middle school science disciplines. This rock and mineral collection is perfect for smaller groups to explore rocks and minerals in an investigative setting. Comes with rock identification guides, Mohs hardness scale for each item, as well as a description book that describes each rock or mineral. Just what I have been looking for to add to my Earth Science section! Highly recommend for Earth Science teachers out there!
