You can't breath when you use this product.. nasty nasty nasty. but it got the rust out of my water softener. Impressed but it was a little scary to use. If you don't have much rust go for the ResCare RK41N to clean your softener. Mine was way too dirty this time. one treatment cleaned everything. I had to flush my system 3 times to get the smell out of the water, but it was worth it for the cleaning it did to my system. My porcelain looks like new again.

It really works. I just replaced the water softener last year and have been using salt with rust removal. I knew that the well water has high level of dissolved iron, which was the reason why the previous water softener was replaced. However, even with rust removal salt, I am still getting some rust stains. Applying the Rust Out in one recharge cycle, a lot of rust was removal from the resin in the water softener based on the water discharged during the recharge cycle. It is a relative cheap and efficient way of keeping the water softener healthy.

I went over 5 years without doing anything special for our water softener other than just replenishing with the green bag softener "salt". We literally started getting brown water that I couldn't recover from after regeneration.
This worked on the first try and we have normal water again. I now use this to sprinkle in every other bag to be more proactive. A LOT cheaper then buying new resin / a water softener!

If you have extremely hard water and want to keep your resin bed working as well as possible, I highly recommend Pro Rust Out. We have well water full of iron and I use this to clean our softeners resin bed about every 3 months. I do it in the early morning so nobody is using hot water and filling our hot water heater back up with water that isn't softened. You can really feel the difference the next morning when you take a shower. It feels like a new softener to me. I also layer it with the salt for gradual maintenance. I have not tried it for any of its other uses, but the main one its sold for, it really performs.
