Rock solid. Once this thing gets a hold of something, it's not going anywhere. The soft rubber won't damage what it's holding. The mount can swivel so you can always get the right angle. I will admit, it is bigger than what I thought it was going to be. I have these mounted to a Honda Pioneer 1000 ROPS which is a hair over 1.75".
I still gave 4 stars because I think with normal usage these will work just fine, plus the great response from Kolpin

I needed something with a wide opening to accommodate a few wide "tools". Mounted on my ATV and took a back country trip. On both units, the single ratcheting arms cracked and one broke completely over the next 2 days in the back country. BUT, this was no casual usage.
-The trip into the camp area alone was 2.5 hours of rough riding, averaging only 6mph.
-The equipment mounted in the Rhino's was fairly heavy, though short; a .308 bullpup
-The mounts were not perfectly vertical. Due to equipment layout the mounts had a slight cant towards the ratcheting arm side.
By the time I got these mounted and took that first trip with them, I was outside the Amazon return window so I emailed Kolpin Customer Service. With pictures of the damage and a receipt, they promptly sent me a replacement pair. Kudos to Kolpin.

Best gun holder I have found.

Mounted these on my vehicle and they have survived being crashed into stuff without damage. They can be rotated on their base. Pretty good quality plastic, apparently. The ratcheting feature allows them to hold larger variety of guns of different dimensions more securely than other gun holders. Other holders that use spring tension can be opened too far by a thick gun and then they have to be squeezed back together. This working of the inside metal will eventually break such holders. This product avoids that problem. They capture the gun and will not open till unlocked so you don't need a little rubber thingy like the other holders use.
Best ATV clamp out there...even the other Kolpin products for similar usage pail in comparison.

These things are super tough and hold tight. This was my second set for my new Quad. I've been using these since 2012 on my Honda Ranchers front rack for hauling tools around the farm and into the timber on the back forty. I can easily fit my Stihl Com-bi-Tool power head plus an attachment into the clamps and it holds the great without any additional securing. My trails are rugged and bumpy and I've never had these clamps let go of anything. Will hold two shovels and an axe at the same time. Grabs right onto a fence post "slide hammer", mine weighs 30 pounds. I've even hauled 4" round wood posts in it for fence repair chores. Best thing about this type is there are no rubber straps to break or loose. Cost a bit more but well worth the investment. Oh, they work great for the shotgun as well, holds it tight without marring the finish, releases in seconds with the push of a button.
Product was good till yesterday one of them wont ratchet anymore

Product was good till yesterday one of them wont ratchet anymore. Never carried anything heavy in them only shotgun/rifle. Says theres a 1 year warranty but who knows how to get in touch with the company that warrants the product. For the price not worth it only last 3 months.
