A Printer Capable of Fine Photos on Linux With Some Adjustments
David L. Moore•October 27, 2017
My computer has a Linux operating system. I tried each of the three Linux drivers available for the Artisan 1430 from Epson, and none of them did everything well. They all printed photos tolerably well. But one had limited paper sizes (no envelope); the other two didn't print the envelopes correctly. Since the Artisan 1430 has a printing engine that is almost identical to that of the Epson Stylus Photo 1400, with the same ink cartridges, I installed one of the Gutenprint Epson Stylus Photo 1400 drivers available in CUPS for my Artisan 1430 and it worked. It prints envelopes correctly and does fairly well with photos. I say fairly well, since the center of the photos are printed correctly --even beautifully--, but about 3/4 inch of the beginning and end of each print shows banding that contains very narrow areas where the white of the paper peeks through. I have found that I can avoid the banding by printing on larger-size paper and leaving a margin of an inch or inch-and-a-half at the beginning and end of the print (this is possible with the PhotoPrint application). The banding problem, by the way, was also present with the drivers Epson has provided for the Artisan 1430 on Linux.
Since, with these adjustments, one can print excellent photos with this printer, I have given it 4 stars. It's a good printer for someone who does photography and wants to display his or her work even in large format and wants to print letters and envelopes for presentable correspondence.

Expensive ink but amazing quality.

Wow! I was blown away with the quality of these prints. My photos look amazing. The prints a pretty quick, but the quality is amazing. We use this to printing our photography or making ads for the business. The Product comes highly recommended. But just know that the ink is very expensive.
Really happy with this printer so far.

I am so happy to have a working printer. I wish I could afford a wider feed for larger paper, but it had been working great, no hiccups. The first one I received did have an ink leak. Epson replaced it immediately at their own expense. This one is working fine. Prints are clean and crisp. It is not archival but I am doing 13x19 inch prints on various papers to good effect.
Highly Recommend

Love this printer!!!
I've owned several Epson printers in the past and loved them all. This is my first wide format printer so I had to go with Epson again and I'm glad I did. Installation of the ink was clean and easy (same as most Epson printers). The first thing I did after install was to print a 13x19 high resolution, full color photo on glossy photo paper. The results were breathtaking. Great color, great detail and the print was dry as it came out of the printer.
I would highly recommend this printer to anyone who need prints larger than the standard 8x10.

Great wide format printer for the price

Love the large format and colors are great but which paper you use is very important. Don't expect great pictures if you print on cheap office type paper. I was also very disappointed that it won't print from the cloud. A special app is required to print from your iPad and it has limited features for changing paper type and sizes. To use all the features you have to use the official printer driver on a computer. That being said, for the price, it's a great printer.
