As many have said this comes with "sand" on it. A simple wash with dish soap and a sponge with a good rinse will remove all residue and grit. The rubber is extremely dense so I see little shock absorbing characteristics in the product. I do think that this would be an awesome mat to set coolers on under leaning posts or on a boat deck. Food for thought...

These arrive new, full of sand and grit!! Do not put in your boat until you have spent 15 minutes washing off. It takes some effort to get all the sand off these mats. I bought white to match boat, it stayed clean 5 minutes. Do not use more than a hose and soft spray and scrub to clean. After first use appears dirty, after cleaning. As far as reducing shock or pounding, it helps somewhat. Wish there was something better, perhaps 2, one on top of the other?
