Review of Central Machinery 7x10 lathe
Chris Rouse•June 24, 2017
This is a nice little Central Machinery 7x10 lathe. It was shipped and arrived quickly. The crate it arrived in looked like it had been rolled at least halfway from China to my door, the shipping bolts were bent, and I was afraid to look inside on initial receipt; however there was no damage to the machine. I unpacked it, and there were no missing parts. This lathe will take some cleaning and adjustment to really work well, but for the price it is a good deal. There is so much information on the internet about set-up, improvement, use, and projects to make with this lathe. Keep in mind that there are some parts you must buy to operate, like bits, center drills, parting blades, etc. Also remember that there is a lot of stuff you need for this machine that you can make yourself. I have been having fun making parts for my other hobbies and the house, and also making tools to use with the lathe itself.
I love it so far

I love it so far. A little smaller than expected. It is a perfect size. No the one shown on here is not what you get. The one you get has the thread dial indicator on the apron and is set against the lead screw. The standard turret style tool post holder is really good, steel and solid as frig. 3/8in tools are a little above center which is fine as long as its not way above center. Youtube has been a huge help. You do have to disassemble the carriage, apron, compound, and cross slide to clean it all. Let's just say Russian would be proud of the amount of cosmolean yak grease this thing comes covered in. The bed and ways were clean and in good condition. You may have to remove a little pain on the carriage underside where it rides on the ways. So far I have had a blast pulling it apart, cleaning, lubing, and turning. 2500RM on a 3in spindle is scary let me tell you. ("Pucker factor zero Mr. Zulu" AvE)
Paperweight maybe

Very low torque. Most experienced folk will tell you this is actually a 7 x 8 and thats still stretching it. Very poor and sloppy crossfeed and the compound rest is worse. The electronics are very problematic.
I am a retired machinist and I am not trying to compare this to any production machine. I'm comparing it to what one should be able to expect from a hobby machine. Expect little and you won't be disappointed.
Luckily I got mine from Harbor Fright for $275 and didn't lose much when we parted company.
If you are bound and determined to get a lathe, try and get one with the attachments that you will definitely need down the road. Attachments do not come cheap. Keep an eye out on Craigslist and be patient. Hope this helps.

I've been using mine for about 2 years now knock on wood no issues. I've cut everything from stainless steel all the way to Wood. On some occasions I have ran her 12 to13 hours a day for a week straight. Mainly working on projects. As long as you take care of this baby she will do you well. I've seen complaints about no shield on the cutting tool. If you need mine message me I took mine off the first day. I prefer a face shield it seems like that Shield gets dirty quick. A word of advice take time and get to know it. That way you can learn its limitations. To get something to do even close to what it does you looking at a couple Grand. So don't expect a couple Grand piece of Machinery out of it. Also after you're done with your cut either turn the switch off or flip the chuck cover sometimes the motor tends to run a little slow afterwards like 2 rpms. But I've accepted it. Happy turning.
