great
It works great for this purpose
Jamie•June 1, 2015
I bought this reed to play in pep band at my college. It works great for this purpose, and actually plays low register notes surprisingly well. As soon as you get into the mid range, it is pretty difficult to play on. If I bought it again, I would try the medium soft one instead, or maybe try shaping the one I have with tools.

It's a pretty good for a synthetic one. It sounds like a reed, but because it's synthetic it doesn't sound as good as a reed. I would say it's very good for at home use. It's softer than medium, but not by a lot. I would not use this reed in a concert, of course, but I'm glad I have it for at home use.
and it SOUNDS like a plastic reed

This is a plastic reed... and it SOUNDS like a plastic reed. If you are looking to play a beautiful, round, warm solo... don't but this reed. Better yet, don't but a plastic reed!
This reed is extremely responsive throughout the entire range of the bassoon. It does not sound like a kazoo. The resin material "Chartier CPB-MD" is made from has a great weight that allows the reed to resonate without buzzing loudly. If you look closely at these reeds, you can see they were scraped by hand and the weight of the reed is balanced beautifully. this explains why they don't sound buzzy even though they are "plastic" (these are not made of the cheap plastic you get from companies like Jones).
With regard for my specific experience: When I play, a bit of air escapes between the upper and lower reed. This does not affect the quality of the reed or its function, but it's distracting to hear your reed leak air while playing. This problem may not exist for everyone and its easy to fix with a little super glue. But, after all, no reed is perfect!

Legere has it figured out--synthetic reeds that don't totally suck, but no one else does

Hideous. A musical crime of the highest order. Legere has it figured out--synthetic reeds that don't totally suck, but no one else does. I only bought this so that when I do an instrument demo I can let students hear how wretched all plastic or synthetic reeds used to be before the Signature Series..... as another reed player wrote, "it's like trying to use a cheap plastic spoon for a reed"....
