The calibration based on species is basic to say the least. I'm skeptical that it's more than a rough estimate of a change in moisture level rather than an accurate gauge. Here's how I use it: Take a reading when you get the wood, write it on the wood, check it again weekly and see if it's gone up/dn or stabilized. For that it probably works fine to determine if the wood has 'acclimated'.

Great tool for the money. Automatic temperature compensation when thermocouple plugged in. Several extra prongs. The accessory remote prongs are nice. And the cap has built in 'calibration pads' so you can check the tool out and/or adjust it back into calibration. Seems very accurate. Would buy again!
