Great for adding thermometers for monitoring pool water temps.

Repiping an in-ground pool, I wanted to place thermometers at critical points to monitor 2 inlet water temps, combined filter water to pool heater and heated water going back to pool. Problem was, I came up with this idea AFTER I had piped the plumbing. Simple solution. I added these saddle fittings (easy to glue on). Next I drilled out a 3/8" hole all the way through to the 1.5" PVC pipe (it's got an internal stamping to center the drill bit). I added a PVC bushing to reduce the fitting to 1/2" (Use a good grade of blue pipe dope) and then added the thermometer (pipe dope also, don't tape). Thermometer here: Just $15

Only thing I did wrong was not to calibrate the thermometers first (my readings were all over the place as a result of rough shipping). There's a nut on the back of the thermometer to do this. Put the probe of the thermometer in a cup of slushy ice water for 30 seconds, set for 0 celsius).

If I had it to do all over again, I'd use the saddle fitting again rather than installing a TEE fitting as the 3" probe sits perfectly in the water flow.
Great. but requires a drill

works fine. No problems.
Great for additions to existing Irrigation Systems, being they will save you time and reduce the complexity of the job.

I have only utilized one. It installed and functions without a problem. My only hang-up (for using a 4 star rating), is I had installed similar fittings in the past, that seemed a little more substantial. But it seems to be trouble free and that all that's really important ! Note these type of plumbing fittings are NOT usually available in home improvement centers. Also that they are available for different sized PVC piping; i.e. 1/2, 3/4, & 1 inch feeds and branch line sizes..

Cheap plastic - broke as I was attempting to fit it onto PVC pipe.
Great solution

Works like a charm. I will ALWAYS have some of these on hand. My only disagreement is drilling a hole after you install it. That means plastic chips in the line, clogging the downstream heads. I would definitely consider how to flush the line after drilling the hole. Considering using a soldering hole to punch the hole, careful about the fumes, of course.
