Not the best replacement head but it works
BreazyAugust 7, 2017
I dread weed eating to the point that I allow my grass to die to avoid it. One of the biggest deterrents to me personally is dealing with the string that comes standard with most trimmers. I've always despised trying to wrap the string around the right way, tap it on the ground, dealing with breakage, etc. What a pain! When I saw this product on Amazon, I thought it would be worth taking a flyer on to see if it would help alleviate some of my weed eating distress. During my time with it over the Spring/Summer, I have mixed feelings.

The head itself installed without too much trouble on my Troy-Bilt gas trimmer. The instructions are a bit worthless in my opinion, with so many options that it's borderline confusing. Regardless, it wasn't tough to figure out. The head comes with three blades pre-installed, and three (?) extra in the packaging. I bought an extra pack of blades for the future as well and I'm glad I did.

The blades are thick and appear to be sturdy. Logic says they shouldn't break easily, but unfortunately I've been running through replacements more often than I'd like to admit. This isn't due to misuse, I am a naturally cautious person and take care to use things correctly. They just wear down quickly. I've used the weed eater around 3-4 times this Spring/Summer, and have already used six blades. This may not seem like a lot, but it feels like I'm changing them a lot considering the thick build. Loading the blades isn't difficult. Removing them is a more challenging task as the shorter they get, the harder they seem to be to remove.

Using the trimmer with the new head took a bit of adjustment. It extends closer to the ground than the stock head, which has caused me to clumsily bump around in the grass. The blades don't have the give that cords/string do either, and the head will straight up stop if you get tied up in some heavy grass/weeds without first being at full throttle. On a positive note, they do seem to cut through weeds, grass, small branches, etc. very well if you hit it right.

This trimmer head + blades are decent, I like it, but I hesitate to give it a firm recommendation with the aforementioned issues I personally have with it. If you can find a head that uses the pre-cut lengths of cord that pop in/out, I would go with that as a more cost-effective and easy to use option.
Didn't last as long as I had hoped.

bought it to replace a similar product the nut got hot and melted through the plastic before I went through too many blades.
Works Great BUT Watch RPM's
Democracy_DoctorAugust 14, 2015
Item as described. DID fit Honda 35cc weed-trimmer. I recommend this product.

The trick with these plastic blades is to keep the RPM's DOWN when you're trimming near ANYTHING that could catch the blade. Keep in mind that small rocks can be kicked off the ground by the spinning plastic blades with enough force to break a window or put an eye out. You must be mindful of obstructions at ALL TIMES and keep the RPM's DOWN.

The reviewers that are having all the problems are using high RPM's which cause the blades to snag, break, and even break the drive-shaft of the trimmer.
Works really well - so much better than cords
Kerry ChandlerMay 21, 2013
I've always hated cord trimmers. The cords break, you have to constantly feed out more, the whole banging the head on the ground thing eventually breaks the head and then you have to do it manually. The ones where you put in a pre-cut length of cord are better, until you start having to cut cords at the precise length, plus they take longer to refill than other options. The blade trimmer is a great alternative that really works.

Pros:
-Cuts through just about anything
-Don't have to change the blades very often (I've had to change about every 3 full trimmings, but I'm hitting a lot of concrete).
-Easy and fast to change the blades.
-Works on a wide variety of trimmers.

Cons:
-Holy GEEZ was it hard to install. I took me over an hour to install. This might be my trimmer's fault; it was a brand new, in the box Ryobi.
-Don't hit the ground. At full speed, hitting the ground with the blades spins me (at 180lbs) nearly 90deg to the right. This isn't the fault of this particular product, though, just blade trimmer heads in general.
-Replacement blades are more expensive than cord, but then again, you might be going through cord faster. At Home Depot, it's about $8 for 12 blades.

Overall, I'm extremely glad I bought this product, especially considering that I got one with an open box for $1.
