Sourdough Starter?
cs•June 13, 2017
Presumably, this 'starter' was 0.5 ounces of 'San Francisco Sourdough Starter.' What we received were no more than 2 grams of yeast cake from a company in our home state of Texas.. A small booklet was included as well as a tiny plastic scraper.
Lesson learned.

Best Starter and best value!!!

Starter came in perfect condition with a detailed instruction book. I had a couple of questions and emailed Linda (the author/supplier) late in the evening and she replied early the next morning. I read the book cover to cover and carefully followed her instructions. Tonight I prepared 2 loaves of delicious sourdough bread. I have tons of starter in the fridge. I plan to make more bread and some sourdough pancakes this weekend!!! I have purchased and failed with many starters. This is the best starter I have ever purchased. My bread was beautiful and had a great flavor.
Don't bother with this product

I am not a fan of this San Francisco starter. I did not have any real success with this product at all. The bread I did manage to make was extremely dense due to a very poor rise. The starter activates extremely quickly at room temperature ( within 2 hrs) but also dies out just as quick. I never achieved a rise out of this starter that results in the spongy consistency which is necessary to bake a decent sourdough bread. Truthfully, this activates better in the refrigerator than at room temperature, which is probably why the seller tells you not to feed your starter at room temperature like other sourdoughs. I also did not like the booklet that came with the package; it was written in a very user unfriendly format, and the author writes to the audience as if she is speaking to juveniles ( your starter is "making babies"--- really???). I will say Linda tried to be helpful and replaced my first pack of starter which died off or never activated at all. But I can't see where this product is good for anyone unless maybe you live in Alaska or have an extremely cold house. In the end, I threw this starter out and bought a sourdough from another company ( Breadtopia) and have had excellent results. No comparison between the two!
Best Customer Service, Excellent Product

I ordered the kit and was very excited about ordering this. Unfortunately when it arrived it had everything but the starter yeast. Linda made a mistake. Big deal, it happens. The good news is she responded within 24 hours and completely remedied the situation. She sent the replacement kit next day air and accompanied the delivery with many bonuses that I did not ask for. She is obligated to give her customers the best satisfaction. Linda takes her business seriously and absolutely responded in a customer oriented manner that you do not see from online businesses.
Now about the product. My fiance started the kit and since have made rolls, waffles, and even bread. The taste of the product is exceptional and is better than what we buy locally from the organic ma and pa bakeries, especially the waffles. Please see Linda's website for the waffle recipe. The best thing is starters only get better with age. I ram very impressed with the flavor of this yeast, We intend to split it with family for xmas gifts.
The directions are fantastic and provides many useful tips. The website allows you to expand on what you can do with the dough.
THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS SECOND TO ONLY THE PRODUCT, Highly recommended.

Makes a very tasty sourdough bread!

I'm a guy who doesn't cook often, but I wanted to give sourdough bread a try for its beneficial fermented qualities. I've had this product for several months now and have made the sourdough bread a number of times. Some have been successes and some have been failures, but it is a work in progress. However, it's been a hit around the house -- the wife and kids love it and often ask when I'm going to make it again!
The starter activated with no problem, and I've continually kept a stash of activated starter in the fridge, which I work from. I've experimented making the bread with different flours - sprouted wheat included, and all have worked, but affect the dough rise in different ways. It takes some experimentation (and wasted flour).
I've found different recipes on the Web, some of which I like more than the one provided with this starter. There are also some "how-to" videos on YouTube, which, for me, was helpful to get a visual on the process. The bread making needs to be done on a day when you're going to be home all day so you can monitor the rise of the dough and catch it at the right time. (I try to do it on days when I watch football all day).
This order also came with a plastic dough scraper, which I found necessary when kneading by hand, but I did not use when using the Kitchen Aid mixer.
