Great unit out of the box. Can be improved greatly with a timer. How to replace the carafe...

OK, this thing works great. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because of the way it shuts itself off. Don't get me wrong - it is very safe and reliable. The unit shuts off by sensing that the water is gone. How? The temperature of the bottom of the stainless boiling container goes above 212 degrees, and the unit trips thermally. Very straightforward, except that when the water has boiled off the bottom, any calcium or other impurities are baked rock hard onto the bottom of the unit. (We have LOTS of calcium in the water here.) So I have been cleaning the unit after each use, by pouring just a bit of vinegar onto the flat bottom, letting it sit for a couple of hours, then wiping off the dissolved calcium. I don't like the idea of using a bunch of electricity and citric acid powder to boil off thick hardened residues. Running with residues in place decreases the efficiency of the distiller.. Plus, I'm lazy. Plus I like to make several batches of distilled water in a row, without cleaning the unit. So, what to do, what to do?
If you ever unplug the unit just before it's done, you will notice that calcium and other impurities are NOT baked on yet. You can just dump whatever goopy water is in the bottom of the boiling chamber, wipe it out quickly, and do another batch straightaway. So, how do we stop the unit BEFORE it bakes all the sludge onto the bottom? (Other than lurking around waiting for it to almost finish?) There are a couple of solutions.
Buy a Century Mechanical Countdown Timer with Grounded Pin. Plug the distiller into it. If your distiller needs six hours to empty the chamber, then set the timer to 5 hours and 30 minutes. The unit will shut off before the sludge bakes on!
*** Edit after one year's use *** The unit has been doing two batches per day almost without exception. Works fine, looks fine. Fan has not become noisy. We quick-clean the chamber with a stainless steel scrubby after _every_ use, to get most of the impurities off. Every 3-4 days on average, when the side of the chamber begins to be obscured by white calcium, put in maybe half a cup or less of white vinegar, make sure to wet the side of the chamberl. Let it sit for half an hour. Maybe wet the side again. Let the vinegar do the work. Any impurities left should come off easily, leaving shiny stainless steel. We have not even used the strong citrus powder solvent.
After about 10 months, there was discoloration of the bands that hold on the carafe's handle. Rust was starting - they are mild steel, not stainless! Two months later, I dropped the carafe, which shattered in sharp pieces, Purchased a 5-quart Lindy's 45444 teakettle. It sits on a 1.5 inch pedestal (two scrap small pieces of 2x4 lumber) so the spout of the kettle is right under the dripper of the distiller. Looks nice, can't shatter, rust or tarnish, much easier to carry and pour.

My wife I bought this distiller as we both need distilled water for our CPAPs. We decided to use the distiller to make our own "bottled" water as the whole-house water treatment system left too much minerals in the the filtered tap water (TDM over 400 PPM). For four years now we have been distilling all of our drinking and cooking water. I distill 12 gallons of water over several days. Â I rinse between each use and use vinegar to remove residue build-up after every 3 gallons. We were fortunate to obtain 1/2 gallon glass bottles from a local dairy processor, glass being the purest container to store water. We use Trace Minerals Research - Concentrace Trace Mineral Drops, available on Amazon, to make the best tasting and purest bottled water.
I estimate that over four years I have distilled upwards of 600 gallons. Apart from rinsing and cleaning, I disassemble the housing and clean the fan and cooling fins. No issues with this product at all.

My first water distiller, the Megahome Water Distiller operates just as I hoped it would, with caveats about cord use by those with arthritic hands. in about 5 hours crystal clear unflavored water is delivered with ease. First use was to supply my neti pot with sterile water as our community water system draws from the river nearby; then I filled the electric water kettle and the gallon lasted for days of hot drinks.
Then I read more and realized I could drink water poured from the included glass pitcher into my glass. I also learned that seeds planted in my new indoor grow light system would benefit from distilled water and no ugly white scale would line all the trays. Of course I would fill my steam mop and iron too. Arthritic hands have been strained by handling a 1gal jug of grocery store distilled water required in the purchase, transportation home, and then into the house, storing the plastic jug under the laundry sink. That required picking the jug from the store shelf, placing it in a cart, lifting it onto the checkstand, placing it back into the cart if the small town checker left it on the counter, pushing the cart to the car, lifting the jug to put into the car, lifting it out of the car to put into my push cart used to unload groceries, lifting it again to place in the cupboard. Now I need only lift the full pitcher once to pour it all into my Anchor Hocking spouted 2.5gal glass container with lid, and then hold a glass or pan or electric water pitcher or the cup with which I fill the iron and floor steamer under the spout. Such great ease of use.
I have wiped the empty distiller out with a cloth with vinegar water on it, rinsed and it's been cleaned. Last use I only wiped it with a fresh kitchen terry cloth and this morning signs of scale exist so I prepare to descale it using the product recommended by Amazon at time of purchase.
Cons regarding the cords. For arthritic hands they are very challenging and painful to push and pull. As costly a device such as this one could surely have included ergonomically effective plug ends, knowing that once a customer experiences the freshness of the Megahome product they would want to continue using it into retirement when so many of us suffer from arthritis in our hands due to our busy lifestyles. These plugs are a serious defect to me, and I would rate them alone at 2 stars or less even though the edges are rounded on one plug. The shorter cord needs correction ASAP.
Conclusion: fantastic efficient product! Please improve the cord plugs.

I am saving a lot of money making distilled water for my two humidifiers

Someone on my Neighborhood social media app, recommended this distiller. I watched videos on line and read reviews and it is working as described by many folks out there. I have used it MANY times since purchased in December 2020. Customer service was great as needed. To clean it in between uses, I briefly rinse the distiller with water, then add one cup of white vinegar and let it sit for some minutes and then use a soft scrub sponge to clean the deposits and reuse the vinegar a few times. Have used the cleaner they send with the product maybe 3 times to get it extra clean. Using it does add to my electric bill since I use it every day, but still cheaper that paying for distilled water at the store or refill station, and easy to do this all at home. I am glad I purchased this distiller. I also saved a few of my plastic containers from when I bought distilled water at the store, and have made extra distilled water to fill some of them up, which is handy. One more thing I researched is, some of my plants get distilled water now, to prevent mineral build up in the soil.

This is my second distiller, I love this machine. I bought a cheaper one for around $115 and it stopped working after 3 weeks. I decided to spend more money for a better brand like this one. It works flawlessly and distills a gallon of room temp water in 5hr15m.
Some tips:
(1) The RESET button is the ON switch, there is no ON/OFF switch so when the distiller automatically shuts off, you will need to press the RESET button to turn the machine back on. I have never had to push it because I have my machine turn off with a smart outlet switch. I HIGHLY recommend buying a timer or a smart switch for this machine because if you let the machine turn itself off, it will bake the sediment into the tank and make it harder to clean. If you manually turn it off with a timer, you never have to hit the RESET button because it will always be ON. There is no problem with having to push the reset button, but I have read reviews of customers having issues with the button not functioning properly, so I avoid ever having to use it by turning the distiller off after 5h15m.
(2) The smart switch I use, which I bought on Amazon, it also shows the kilo watt hours used by the distiller in the app. Distilling a gallon is 3 KW.h = $0.36/gallon. Again, I HIGHLY recommend a smart outlet, they are cheap and will save you cleaning time and having to use the RESET button.
(3) For cleaning, the distiller comes with anhydrous (lack of water) citric acid cleaner, which works incredibly well. The instructions tell you to put 1-2tbsp in the distiller and turn it on to heat the water which cleans the unit. I do not do this. I simply fill the distiller with tap water and add 1tbsp citric acid, stir the water to mix it, then let it sit for 10-15 mins. Even room temp water will clean the unit completely. There is no need to use more electricity by heating the water to clean. Just use a regular dish scrubber (not metal obviously) and the bristles will wipe it all away. The only part that will need light scrubbing is the bottom where the most heat comes from. I recommend using the cleaner after 2-3 gallons of distilling. It's not necessary to clean it completely after every use UNLESS you let the distiller go until it automatically shuts itself off, then you might want to clean it more often. I just use the scrubber and scrub gently around the sides & bottom with the water that is left in the tank and use it again. The small bottle of cleaner you get with the distiller will last about a month, I recommend buying a 5lb bag of Anhydrous Citric Acid cleaner from Amazon or wherever, it's cheap.
***To sum up, NEVER let the machine shut itself off if you can help it. Buy a smart outlet switch to turn it off, I bought the BN-Link brand from Amazon, the app is excellent and you can turn the unit on or off with your phone. I use the app for the smart switch to set a timer 5h15m.
If you take care of it, clean it, you'll be very satisfied. You get what you pay for.

This distiller still works flawlessly after almost 3 years of very heavy use. I will distill a gallon of water 2-3 times/day consistently. I use the distilled water to water my plants, and for drinking water. I add 1/4tsp of Himalayan rock salt per gallon of distilled water to add minerals. I clean the distiller after every 20-25 uses with anhydrous citric acid, which cleans the reservoir completely. To do this I will put 1tbsp of citric acid in with hot water and fill the reservoir and let sit for 30 minutes or so. I also recommend cleaning the fan blades every 6 months or so. This product has held up over time, and I highly recommend it.
