Stylish & Functional
M. MillerJanuary 12, 2018
This product replaced a less-expensive tamper that looked like stainless steel but lost its chrome surface in the dish washer. The BlueSnail is a pricier tamper but it is very good quality, stylish-looking, and pleasingly heavy in the hand. I keep my espresso machine out on the kitchen counter adjacent to a tray with the steam cup and other various implements needed for espresso making. This tamper looks elegant as part of that set. Ive no doubt that the product will be attractive and functional for decades to come. Highly recommended.
Solid.

I bought this for an espresso machine that I purchased more than 5 years ago and have never used. But when I finally get around to it I'll have everything I need for the perfect espresso experience.

It is actually two pieces that screw together. It it very heavy, so I don't think it is hollow, but it is definitely not machined from a single piece of stainless steel. I'm not quite sure it is stainless steel. Maybe plated brass. It came in a little white box that said "Made in China."

It should last me quite a while, though, since I probably won't use it that often. Perhaps it could double as a nutcracker. Or paperweight.
Lovely tamper but......

This item looked really nice online. Purchased it when I purchased my DeLonghi Dedica 680 bc this item was checked at the bottom of the product page that it suggests be bought together. So I did. It arrived perfect, shiny no damage. So what's the problem? It is extremely heavy. Why make this product so heavy? The other problem is that it doesn't exactly fit proper into the coffee filter for tamping the grind. For me, while it looks so professional , I'm not going to use it. I wound up using the tamping tool that came with the machine. I was going to return it but after postage, I was going to get a $4 refund. Not worth it. So I'll keep it.
Very classy and great quality, gets the job done right!

It is amazing how balanced this very heavy tamper lies in my hand. It feels like a million bucks, lol.... perfectly smooth and heavy as it should be. And it makes a big difference to the brewing of an espresso. I have a plastic tamper, which is attached at the side of my espresso machine, and this device is really useless. It won't do a good job at pressing and packing the coffee in the receptacle. My espresso machine is the DeLonghi EC 155, which is a nice machine, apart from the not-so-fancy plastic tamper.
This stainless tamper makes a big difference: The coffee is compacted well and smoothed on the surface. The brewing takes place more evenly, when I brew a double batch. Before, without it, the two outlet holes would dispense unevenly, one always being full throttle and the other dripping away, and sometimes the left, or the right, depending on how the grounds were compacted. With this tamper, you can press them evenly, so no more dripping on one side and flushing on the other. And there is a perk: if you have two espresso sizes (one cup/ two cups), you could buy a smaller tamper base and screw that on for the one cup size, too, because the base can be unscrewed. If you have the DeLonghi, you need this 51 mm size for the two cup measure. I highly recommend this tamper, at a price that simply cannot be beaten!
Misrepresenting to charge more money

As other 1 star reviewers have noted, this Tamper is completely misrepresented. It's not one piece (mine was unscrewed in the box) and thus is NOT uni-body. It's also NOT solid stainless steel. As others have noted it's magnetic so they claim this is proof, but it's not. Some stainless is made with chrome instead of nickle and that stainless IS magnetic, but that's beside the point. It's not solid. You can actually plate stainless onto other metals if you plate copper first, and this has an obvious layer of copper (as well as copper pulled out with a Q-tip), but the final coating may be stainless or it may be chrome. Both use copper as a base plate so it's hard to tell what this is. This appears to be iron tamper, plated with copper, then plated with stainless or chrome. What it isn't is what it was described as and thus the one star. Still deciding if it's worth the hassle to send it back.
