I bought this thing about 3.5 years ago and used it once or twice for a short camping jaunt. Finally got around to using it for distance and recently did a 1300 mile road trip up 395 in California. Very windy areas and it worked great. No noticible noise above what our roof racks create and still got 26 mpg in our Mazda 5.

** edit for an update ** We took another road trip a few weeks later and drove around 2800 miles. Once again this carrier did great, including trudging through 5 monsoons in Arizona & New Mexico, one of which was the heaviest rain I had ever driven in. Only a tiny amount of water came through the open bottom holes, which is easily remedied with some tape but this was an extraordinary amount of rain. So nice not having to load up more inside the car.

We just drove 1200 miles around trip using this. I have a 2017 Toyota Sienna with factory roof rack system. I'll admit I over loaded it a bit at about 200-225lbs. The Toyota is rated at 150lbs on top though. We drove mostly 75mph and some occasional 80-90 bursts dealing with traffic. I wouldn't recommend going much faster than 80mph with this thing being empty though. I would guess it is stressing out the mount points a bit as I hear an occasional pop when it's empty up there over 80 in high winds. We had some stormy weather and some rain and it remained dry. The high winds came from most directions on this trip as we traveled around our destination a bit with it empty, to and from our hotel and it did very well. We got bags for 7 passengers inside it. Saving the rear of our van for small items and more interior comfort. I also recommend some rubber straps across the back of it for extra insurance on that lock. It never came loose but never know. If your van has a sunroof, be sure to leave room if you plan to use it by shifting the box back some. I had it full forward as we also had a 400lb wheelchair hanging off the rear of our van. I positioned the box to give me more weight to the front of the van. With this box, our wheel chair, and 7 passengers, I calculated the weight on our 2017 van to be about 1800lbs. We averaged 25.4mpg from Louisville KY to Florence KY. But on the way back we only averaged 22mpg. I know pulling more hills seemed to be the key due to elevation. We traded a 2006 Sienna and I believe it would have done really well with this box too as there is no real difference between vans on the roof system. Although I wouldn't over load a pre 2017 van as ours is the first year for the 296HP and handled the combined weight effortlessly. Also, install took me all of 15 minutes. Removal was just as easy.

My son and I just returned from a 10,100 mile road trip from Los Angeles to Anchorage Alaska and back along the Alaska Highway and through Banff and Jasper National Park in Alberta. I drive a 2009 Honda Ridgeline pick-up truck with Honda stock roof racks. This roof carrier worked perfectly for the whole trip - no issues with either rain (and we hit plenty of it - some torrential) or dust getting inside (and at least 400 miles of rough dusty highway). It also fit perfectly using the included hardware and the was sure to add the moisture tape over the open holes.

Aside from the essentials of keeping out moisture and dust - the most significant benefit of this carrier is its low cost to cargo space ratio. This thing held our tent, two sleeping bags, two Thermarest pads, a camp stove and jackets we weren't using - saved a lot of space in the bed of the truck and kept the trip nice and organized. Yes - there is some wind noise at speeds above 75 mph but I get those anyway with the Ridgeline roof racks. The rear opening was not an issue for us as we just jump up in the truck bed to load and unload the carrier.

I would definitely recommend this as a much lower priced alternative to some of the other roof carriers out there.

The Good:
Have just returned from a long weekend camping trip, my first using this box. It performed absolutely perfectly. I have nothing but good things to say about the box itself. It doesn't look ridiculously big but is cavernous. I managed to get a large screen tent, 8-person tent, 3 cot bags, 3 camp chairs and 3 sleeping bags in there before getting close to the recommended weight limit (100lbs). I managed to chuck in a couple of fishing rods for good measure. The ability to move all that stuff from the car was a huge benefit for the passengers! You will likely need to take a step stool when you use it unless you play basketball for a living. It seals up well and the lock, while not substantial looking, seemed to do a very good job. I mounted it as far back as I could without interfering with the trunk lid and did not even notice it at highway speeds. This was a very pleasant surprise. I'm sure it affects economy but I'm afraid I don't really monitor that. Did not seem to affect handling at all, even when fully loaded.

The Bad:
So why only give it 4 stars if it was so good? The hardware that comes with it seems of good quality but my roofrack (factory Mercedes rack) was apparently too thick and the U shaped bars that go under the rack and into the box did not protrude far enough into the box to fasten with the provided fasteners. That said the fasteners themselves I did not like at all. They don't seem like they'd stay tight but I haven't read much about them loosening. Anyway, my solution was to buy 1/4 inch 28tpi nylon locking nuts which were short enough to get good purchase on the U rods and provide peace of mind that they wouldn't vibrate loose. They also stick up less than the provided fasteners meaning there's less material to snag whatever you're trying to put in there. A box costs about 8 bucks for 100 and I'd use these any day over what is provided. Slightly longer to ratchet down but way more secure. Anyway, the hassle involved in figuring this out cost the box a star.

Also, shipping was ugly. Failed scheduled delivery, no follow up, damaged packaging (product was fine)

Overall a brilliant box, worth every penny. Looking forward to many more trips with it.

This thing performed so well during our 1785 mi trip to Colorado! Not a single issue, well except that I put too much stuff in it and had a difficult time closing it. I rearranged some bags and it finally closed. Even then, it did have a slight bulge in the middle, but no water or dirt got in. I did use a set of ratchet straps just to ensure it stayed closed and locked.

It came totally assembled in one big box. The shell itself is not that heavy, I got it on my Pilot by myself (empty of course). It was easy to secure the shell to the roof rack with the provided hardware.

We got up to 90 mph for a good stretch in TX and there were no issues. Some reviews say they heard a whistling when they got up to 80 mph or so, but we had no issues whatsoever.

It even fit up in my attic, just barely, and I have a pretty small opening in my garage with a ladder.
