Mr Beams 532 = excellent!

Mr Beams are the best motion detecting battery-operated lights I've ever bought.
I've had these for over six years and they're still going strong. I have one on the inside post of my front porch steps. It's never failed to work, even with the "big freeze" here in Texas in February 2021. On dim during night and when it detects motion it goes bright. One extra positive"¦it lets me know when critters come to my porch steps (I usually sit next to my living room front window). It's easy to tell when the batteries get weak as it constantly cycles on as if motion was detected. And the batteries last several months. Never really kept track but six months, at least.

I use another as a night light in my bathroom. I set it on top of the medicine cabinet. Light is soft enough to work as a night light. When I need to get up in the middle of the night I can see enough to get to the bathroom. Once inside it detects me and goes bright. Easily enough to do "business" yet not blindingly light as turning on the 60-75 watt overhead light.
Works well, but design can be improved with mylar to make it brighter

I needed some path lights in a space that did not have access to wiring nor much sunlight. The Mr. Beams lights work well for this application.

An interesting thing noted by other reviewers was that the lights come with a white sticker that is not attached. Without the sticker, the lights themselves are more inconspicuous both when they are off and on. But the downside is that without the sticker they emit less light as a lot of light is lost to the dark plastic.

If you put the white sticker on, the path light is greater but the glare of the lamp itself is greater too as much of the light is bounced out horizontally instead of down.

I ended up cutting pieces of mirrored mylar to the same shape of the white sticker and attaching that with double sided tape. The mylar has the advantage that it blends with the background by day (it reflects bushes and trees), but by night it bounces about 50% more light down to the ground. The mylar doesn't make as much of a hot spot either.

I tested the light brightness at ground level using a photometer (see image), and found:

* No sticker: 35.2 lux
* White sticker: 41.5 lux
* Mylar: 50.2 lux

Would be nice if Mr. Beams offered a mirrored mylar sticker, but in the meantime I'm making my own!
changed my review to 5 stars

Updated review: I'm changing my review to 5 stars. I really like these lights and originally had certain expectations that were not in keeping with the manufacturers intent. These are designed to provide indoor lighting without overwhelming you with flood lighting. They work great and I actually ordered another pair. I may order two more after that If I have a need. If you need spot area lighting these are great and very compact. Stairways at night, hallways at night, walk in closets, etc.. They are more for lower level lighting. I especially like this in our walk in closet when I have to get up before my wife. The light automatically gives me enough light to see without spilling out in to the room and waking my wife. I have three different versions of Mr. Beams and they all work great. Excellent battery life as well. Mr. Beams is my go to lighting for this type.

I love Mr. Beams products and will continue to purchase. Their outdoor lights are great and 5 stars across the board. The only problem I have with this light is that it needs to be advertised as a night light. The brightness is nothing close to their other lights and really qualifies only as a glorified night light. Its not very bright, which for a night light is great. Also, the motion detection is not nearly as good as their other products. I have this resting above a door frame, and another at waist level on the stair. I have to pass pretty far out of the door before it will pick me up and on the stairs I have to be pretty close as well. The side motion detection is pretty limited too. For the price they're ok and might fit your needs. I actually just purchased another Mr. Beams during Black Friday that is cheaper than this and will provide better light and motion detection. Again, Mr. Beams are great, but this should really be advertised as a motion detector night light.
Reliable Bright Light!

Update Nov 2021
These lights have worked reliably for 4 years on the same batteries! I'm super happy with the performance and durability. The white plastic case has yellowed in the sun over the years, but the waterproof seal is still intact. I replaced the 3C batteries and reinstalled the light on the post. The LED is super bright again! I would recommend these motion sensor lights without hesitation.

Original review Sept 2017
I just installed two lights outdoors on my front stairs. One at the bottom and one 7 steps higher at the top. The bottom light turns on when I'm about 6-7 feet away approaching the stairs. The top light turns on when I'm on the second step, perfect. The LEDs are amazingly bright! Dark brown steps are now easy to see.

The motion sensors do not activate if it's light outside.
There are two switches inside the unit...one switch selects the duration the lights will stay on, Max or Min. The other switch selects light off or glow, for when the motion sensor is not activated.
One light requires 3 C batteries.
The unit comes with mounting screws and drywall anchors.
Setup is easy - just set the switches to your preference and install the batteries.
The unit fits nicely on a 4x4 vinyl post.
Very Effective Dependent on Specific Needs

I'm pleasantly surprised by how well these lights accomplish the tasks I require of them. It is important to understand, however, that how effective these lights are very much depends on the specific circumstances they are used for. First off, I have read in several reviews (and in the claims of the manufacturer itself) that these lights only work in total darkness. Not true. One of these lights is mounted about the door of my bedroom. With my 50" TV on and a 60W light near my bed on, about 15 feet away, the light will still turn on. I installed this light becaise my light switch is not right next to my door and I wanted some light when I entered the room so I could see and get to the light switches. It works perfect in this set up. The end of my bed is about 5 feet from the spot below the light. My movement, while I am laying down, does not trigger the light. As soon as I get up, the light triggers. The light is just bright enough to allow me to see my path and things in the way, but doesn't "light up" the room, which is what I was hoping for. If you are expecting these lights to be flood lights, forget it. But if you are looking for low wattage lighting just enough to make a path or area visible, these are perfect. Coming in the door from outside, as soon as I open the door, the light triggers. My door opens out to the pool deck. I installed a light on the wall of the house to provide a light near my door so I can see to use the key. That light works great there, too. My only concern is that the lights are powered by 3 C babatteruies. These are heavy and not known to last long. I wonder why it isn't powered by button batteries instead.
