Maybe it works for smaller files, but the only reason I bought this was to be able to play both xenoblade chronicles x (19GB) and breath of the wild (11GB). I can't have both, so I thought I'd back each up and copy over the one I'm currently playing.
I managed to copy the data over, but the Console has never been able to write the entire game without removing the drive and asking that I restart the Wii U.
I've gone through three external drives trying to find one that works, so if your Wii U doesn't work with a recommended drive from Amazon, then This probably won't help you.

Ordered the hard drive for my kids' Wii U, connected it to the Wii, formatted it, but then it would not accept any downloads. After a little while it started making an audible clicking noise. Giving it 1 star as I contacted the company as instructed on the card in the package and no reply to date.

My Wii U was out of memory space. I purchased the 2 TB model maybe that was over kill but geez, one should be enough. It was literally plug in and set up and forget about it. No more notices from Nintendo, kids play without complaints....peace!

It's small, easy to use & comes with a manual for easy set up for your Wii U.
I got the 2TB model, though I probably won't need the extra space since I own most of my games physically but with DLC and update data as well as Virtual Console, my 32gb model soon ran out of space, so I wanted to be safe than sorry.
The drive comes with it's own 3.1 Y-cable, so you don't need to buy one seperate unless you just prefer a particular brand. The cable it comes with is rather stiff but works just fine.
It also comes with an external power supply AC adapter, but you don't need to use it if you are using both USB plugs on the Y-cable. It boots up automatically with the Wii U when powered on, or when it goes into sleep mode to update.
It's so small & sleek, I just love how it looks next to the system. It's really neat. Couldn't ask for a better drive.

The product could not have been easier to set up and functions flawlessly. I wish I had gotten this a long time ago. You have to have it to play Breathe of the Wild on a Wii U.
