This item is well made and does the jobs it is intended to do. Designed to be useful for sharpening fishing hooks (long thin groove), and small pointy tools (small continuous grit section) in addition to knives and other edged tools. I sharpened some fishing hooks and a bait knife easily and effectively in no time at all (actually be careful not to apply too much pressure while sharpening because the diamonds cut aggressively -- right out of the box at least). In the hope that lubrication is not needed for sharpening with this item, I purposefully used it dry. I can report that it sharpened the hooks and knife just fine used dry.
Would've given 5-stars for it's usefulness but deducted one star because the cover is annoyingly difficult to remove (it is also difficult to separate when the cover is inserted on the bottom as a base). Hopefully, the cover will loosen up a bit over time.
I recommend this product to anyone needing a fast-cutting, portable sharpener. Hope this review is helpful.

It works very well for small blades using the standard sharpening procedure. Larger blades can also be sharpened by holding the blade steady and working with the stone. The stone grit is very adequate for use while on a trip.
