I just figured out that the oe bottom plate does not offer a SPREADER feature like most staplers. I like this stapler (I purch two) very good quality but every staple on cardboard I find that I have to squeeze a little bit more (due to hand leverage) I use a deep jaw v-grip to just go over them with abut more squeeze. THAT BEING SAID sometimes it DOES happen to SPREAD the staples, RATHER THAN "CURL IN" the staples. and THOSE SPREAD STAPLES need no attending to at all.
