Great storage solution for a small business

This was the best option I found in my search
Good for what it is - and costs. But will not functionally last.

In short, got what I wanted, but started breaking down after a few months.

I wanted simply an external enclosure for several HDD's, one with its own cooling fan. Didn't need raid/want - that was all handle by the OS (I run linux, which does recognized all drives). Used the eSATA connection, mostly for personal reasons.

All was fine at first, although sometimes the fan got very noisy. Then the eSATA connection failed. The OS didn't see any of the drives anymore. I tried several other SATA cards and cables - all of which I new worked - but still no luck. I switched to the USB connector, and, surprisingly, it worked, albeit noticeably slower than the eSATA. Soon after, the fan started getting really noisy (hard to believe, huh?), and then just stopped. I removed the top drive and discovered that the fan spindle had slipped out of the fan motor unit (ie, the fan motor was running, but no fan blades attached). I managed to push the fan spindle back into the motor assembly, and it started to work again, but still noisy. Then, slowly, it stopped intermittently, finally stopping completely. The drives were still seen by the OS, but were definitely heating up.

I wanted to replace the fan, but couldn't figure out how to take the box apart. Seems like they designed the unit so no one could get into it to do just what I was trying to do.

I am tempted to get a replacement (maybe the manufacturer would send me one at this point). But not sure if it will breakdown just the same.

FWIW: I have read reviews of other similar products, and they seem to have similar, if not worse problems. Even the ones that cost more.

Worst and slowest enclosure I have ever owned. Hangs and lags frequently. Impossible to work with video on this product.
