Well, the first time I used this, I followed the instructions. I applied the stick to a warm iron (a T-Fal) from which the water had been removed, let the iron cool, rubbed the iron bottom with an old terry cloth dish towel. Nothing happened.
So, the second time, I tried a slightly different strategy, one drawn from my experience with the Rowenta Hot Iron Cleaner. I applied the stick to the warm bottom of the dry (no water inside) iron, turned the heat to high (cotton setting), then (when the iron was fairly hot) ironed* an old terry cloth dish towel. A few back and forth swipes, the terry cloth showed the "dirt" and the bottom of the iron was perfectly clean.
I don't know how much of the tube one has to use. When you are rubbing it against the iron bottom, you won't see any scaling, etc. come off. All I can suggest is to start with maybe just a couple of rubs against the iron bottom, follow my instructions, then repeat if necessary.
Lastly, this worked much faster and better than the Rowenta Hot Iron Cleaner I have been using and did not set off my fire alarm.
*Do not rub the terry cloth towel against the iron (among other things, you risk burning yourself). Lay the terry cloth towel (I fold it first) on the ironing board, then iron the towel.
