Unparalleled near-field experience for a compact speaker, not exceptional from a distance.

these speakers were my first Audioengines. They have an amazing sound stage for such compact, low footprint speakers. However, these babies are optimized for near field experience (naturally for PC speakers) and do not sound so great from across the room. For this reason, I decided to upgrade to the much larger A5+. However, in the process of upgrading to the A5+ I discovered the JBL LS350 which sound great no matter where you are in the room. Game over. However, to someone who has too much clutter or too little room, I can highly recommend the A2+.
Value and quality

I would not bother spending more for the 5+ although I have not heard them I feel these speakers are plenty for most people that want a great value speaker without going crazy. These are excellent for a person who wants good quality sound in a all in one set up. Not for earth shaking bass lovers. But in my opinion they hold there own in overall music with bang for your buck value. They are fairly big, but not too big. Keep in mind in the manual they recommend the usb hook up for best quality and to enable the DAC (digital audio converter) function. I only say this as companies continue to add more USB C hook ups and less usb. So make sure you have a extra usb hook up or you will need a converter if you are considering buying a new laptop in 2017/18. Again only for what they recommend with the best for Dac.
No comparison between these and Bose Companion 20's.

I was looking for smaller computer speakers without a sub. In this price range, there are not many small ones. Basically these and Bose Companion 20's. I did a lot of research and saw that these had great reviews, but I got suckered in with the "great" Bose C20 reviews. As soon as I plugged in the Bose, I knew I had made a mistake. Ordered these three days later and can't believe how good they sound. Really incredible for the size. I'm not an audiophile and I wasn't given these for a review but I appreciate great sound. You can even add a sub but for now, I'm very happy with the A2+'s.
Cheap internals, pretty on the outside.

These little speakers look and sound great. They are a nice small size that makes them great for computer speakers. But from the beginning I have had scratchy intermittent sound from the left speaker. Tapping it sometimes made it work. After checking connections and cables I decided to open it up and see if I could find a connection to fix.
The main board looked cheaply made. It had a dusty, sticky feeling and look. Many of the solder joints were poorly done. Many had a white, crystalline look. I re-soldered every major connection. There were two pins on the main IC amplifier chip that didn't appear to have been soldered.
These speakers have only been in a protected, dry, clean climate controlled environment.
Now it seems to work, but you shouldn't have resort to this.

I enjoy music, especially Classical music - and recently wanted a nice pair of speakers for my computer. I have Bowers and Wilkins home theatre setup, which is fantastic - so I almost went towards the MM1 speakers, but these Audioengine a+ caught my attention because of the high praise.

They sound absolutely fantastic, it's the first speaker to really blow me away in terms of the sound. It's a very balanced, full, rich sound. I don't even need a sub, because I mainly listen to classical which isn't as bass heavy.

I tried some games, too - Battlefield 1 and Doom, great sound. But they really excel at music.

Easy to connect, USB goes to PC, power, and then each speaker connects to the other.

Pros:
Excellent packaging with Micro fiber bags holding the wires, and speakers
Very nice design, feel solid.
Sound is worth the price.

Cons:
The only thing I can think of is the exposed tweeter, almost jammed it in moving the speaker a few times, so a protection dome would be nice
Possibly volume being in the back is a bit awkward, but not terrible
