great boots BUT external layer was peeling off (and looking bad) 2 months after purchase

Needs an explanation here. I am older and feet a little sensitive. Three years ago + purchased the same boots, same SKU from a store in Toronto.
Best boots EVER ... boots were incredibly comfortable, no wear on my feet or ankles. Worked outside part of the time in winter, always dry and warm. 5++ stars. But as time will tell, sole began to separate from the body after the 3rd year. I have probably glued four times!!
I was thrilled to have found the boots available on Amazon as a new pair was badly needed.
One problem. After about two months the external layer began to peel near and around the toe on both boots. Although I have yet to feel wet - I am not sure the water resistant factor will hold and the boots look terrible. I have tried to glue back with no success.
One flaw and a 5 star rating to 2 stars.. So very sad.
I bought the same boot in 2015 and love them. I originally bought these boots to ride ...

I bought the same boot in 2015 and love them. I originally bought these boots to ride my motorcycle back & forth to work but they are so comfortable & durable that I used it for hiking & now as a work boot. I've hiked 12 miles in a day without a single blister. They are super water proof & great when hiking in the snow. They have enough room to allow me to use the Dr. Scholl's CF440 insert (I have relatively flat feet) & my extra thick double hiking socks. The old boots are beginning to show their wear though they still have at least another 3 years of life as work boots. The new pair will be used for riding my Indian Vintage Chief (don't want to wear raggedy boots on such a nice bike!) & hiking.
So far, they seem like they are well worth the money.

Update: These did become more comfortable around the ankles with a little use and I really wanted to like them. But, I am very disturbed by the fact that, having only worn them about a week total in an entirely urban environment (no scree or gravel, etc.), exclusively for walking around in winter weather, both boots have already gotten fairly large divots in them. One is in the side and the other in the toe. For nearly new boots, this isn't remotely acceptable.

I just got these and was wearing them for a good part of today. I bought a similar pair of Hi-Tec's at least 15 years ago and really loved them, but they finally died (not a heavy user). I note that they used to have more padding around the ankles, and a part the ankle was made of a softer material. than the rest of the boot. Absent that, these are a bit stiff in the ankle, and rub a little, but not badly. I assume they will break in (or I will). Otherwise, they were very comfortable out of the box, and, like the old ones, remarkably light.
Solid but comfortable. Good for town and trail.

I'm very satisfied with thes Altitude V I WP's so far. I owned two pairs of Altitude V's in the past. In comparison the leather on these V I's is a bit stiffer. Despite that they are breaking in relatively quickly with no discomfort. As far as fit, they run about a half size small. They are also a tad on the narrow side. I normally wear a size 10.5 and my feet are a little wide but I can normally get by with a normal width shoe. I ordered these in an 11 EE and they fit perfect and allow for the wearing of a thicker boot sock. The inner boot and insole are very padded and comfortable and there are no hot spots. Ankle support is very good. You know you're wearing a boot, but they don't feel heavy or clunky. Construction seems very good for an affordable hiking type boot. The soles have a good tread on them and are very supportive but not too stiff. Some people have mentioned that the eyelets have chewed up their laces, but these seemed to be finished off smoother than my older V's were. I haven't felt any snags or rough spots while lacing. Haven't had them in super wet conditions yet ,but walking around in the rain my feet have remained dry as a bone. Overall these are great boots for casual/moderate hiking, but they're also comfortable enough to wear around town. I like them and I would suggest them to others.
Used to be a fan. Company under new ownership. Awful customer service.

I have been buying this or similar products from Hi-Tec for about 5 years now, and have been pleased, until this pair.

Less than 5 months old and the left pair develops a crack all the way through the upper at a wear crease by the ball of the foot. The crack is all the way through which makes the WI winter colder and wetter for my left foot.

I contacted Hi-Tec at 1-800-521-1698 option 0. I explained the situation, here are some excerpts:

Hi-Tec: Have you tried to return them via Amazon, it will be quicker.
Me: Its not Amazon's product.

Hi-Tec: It will take at least 5-6 weeks to get you a replacement pair and we need you to send us the defective pair.
Me: What should I wear in the meantime?
Hi-Tec: That's policy. We are moving on Friday (2-3). We have been purchased.

I guess I'll reach out to Amazon or my credit card company. Wonder if I get boots from a different manufacturer.
