Finally My Kuhl Runs Right!
ClompyJuly 28, 2017
Solved annoying and inefficient short-cycling on my 36K BTU machine. Design flaws of Kuhl units mean that unless super tightly sealed everywhere around the window, the machine will draw in warm air past the thermostat and call for the compressor prematurely. Now with this thermostat the machine runs perfectly. Would be 5 stars if it didn't eliminate the medium fan speed and if the unit was backlit - it is dim and hard to see in lower light settings. Also a shame that after spending $2,500 on my Friedrich unit that I needed to by this additional item, but at least it runs great now. Also, using this only required me to make completely reversible changes of firmware settings, not permanent changes as someone had mentioned (no USB firmware update required).
Not bad, but not good enough

Not bad, but not good enough...
Finally Friedrich did what I wanted. I had every hope of them coming out with a thermostat for use away from the unit itself.
Well, they did, but there are flaws.
First, as someone else mentioned, you lose the 'medium' fan speed. Yep, it's either Low, High or Auto.
Second, there should be a 'fan only' setting, and there isn't. Sometimes I just want to circulate the air, pull in cooler air from outside, and be energy smart. Can't do that with this attached. Yes, you can 'return' control to the unit, but it involves 'turning on' 4 settings on the unit itself, and is a bit of a hassle. Easy to do, but a hassle. I'd like to know what the other 96 settings are for, by the way... Speaking of the fan, you also lose the control of 'auto' or 'continuous' fan. I would think for the money, and for what we paid for these units originally, Friedrich could make a thermostat that is fully-functional in all aspects.
Will make your KUHL have a 2-speed fan mode only

It's a really nice and solide device.

But the only bad thing about this add-on thermostat is that after you install it (Firmware via thumb drive) it will change it from 4-speed fan mode into a 2-speed....
I'm feeling lucky that I called Friedrich tech support before I did go ahead installing the new Firmware, after that you are stuck with the change...
works much better than built in controls
aemikeDecember 15, 2013
I have had this installed for a few weeks now and overall I'm pleased with the thermostat. Keeps my office at a nice comfortable temperature and isn't affected but outside temps like the built in controls were. Only complaint is that I haven't found the method to get it into "auto" mode so it will switch from heat to cool automatically as needed throughout the year. Maybe I'm missing something or maybe it just isn't there.
