I figured if anything was good in this drive it was probably the laser
Prisoner849•May 27, 2018
Definitely not new. I switch the logic board from my old drive to this "new" one, installed the drive into my 360, and tested a game. The drive made screeching, scraping, and crunching sounds when attempting to spin the disc, and it would not read it (my Risen 2 disc got a bit scratched up). I figured if anything was good in this drive it was probably the laser. Thankfully I repair computers, phones, etc professionally, so swapping the laser from this "new" drive into my old drive was actually very easy. Now my discs are spinning smooth and reading just fine. Thanks for a working laser i guess.
P.S. They conveniently put an Amazon warranty sticker right over the power port on the drive, so there was no way to test if it works without removing the sticker. Wow.

You HAVE to know how to solder.

It's a great disc drive, it's just that you really need to know what you're going into when purchasing it. I bought this nextec disc drive thinking it would be as simple as disconnecting the old disc drive and plugging in this new one. That ended up turning my Xbox 360 into a glorified DVD player. The correct way to replace your old disc drive with this one requires soldering as the Xbox will only recognize the motherboard of the disc drive that it was built with.
Works great, but you need to know what you're getting into

My XBox 360 slim has ejected the disc (quitting the game) frequently during use, and it took forever to get it to recognize that the tray is actually closed. This drive, purchased through nextec, fixed the problem. It's a perfect match.
However you NEED to know: the XBox motherboard knows to recognize the original drive for Microsoft DRM purposes or whatever. Just drop this in, and you'll have nothing more than a second rate DVD player. You have to either open the unit and swap the drive board (fairly easy soldering project) or flash the board somehow.
I was a bit disapointed to see an Amazon branded WARANTEE VOID sticker over the connection port you HAVE to use to simply install and use the product, even without modifying it. Really?? That's like the dealership putting a Warantee Void if Opened sticker on your new car door, or a new keyboard with the VOID sticker over the USB plug. I can understand not waranteeing something I've opened, replaced components, and soldered on, but this is completely unreasonable on the level you'd expect in a Dilbert comic.

Difficult install, but works great!

Did not realize how difficult it would be to install! You must switch the board from your old xbox 360 drive onto the new one. I took my xbox and the new drive to a computer repair shop and had it done. Works great! I normally just buy a new xbox when the old one goes out, but could not part with my COD special edition.
and the video was clear and easy to follow

Product arrived very quickly. I had to swap the circuit board from the broken drive I was replacing into this new drive, and the video was clear and easy to follow. Very nice touch to include the Torx wrench. My XBox is fixed!
