Good build quality and performance
Eric JensenApril 2, 2017
We like this machine a lot. The variable speed is easy to use, though I was surprised how much cranking one needs to do to move it from one end of the speed range to the other. It runs very smooth with low vibration even at full speed which is cooking - 4000 RPM! The fence is a nice touch and well made. The table has a square replaceable MDF insert in the center. My preference would be to not have this but you might like it. I feel like small parts might not sit perfectly flush once that gets a ding or two. But it is adjustable with fours set screws from under the table so you can level it. The drill chuck is OK. I replaced mine with a better one. The depth stop has speed nuts both on top and underneath. The one underneath is a nice touch not often seen. Allows you to set the quill extended down. Many good uses for that feature. One odd thing is that it is not as tall as my other drill presses. It's a good 10 inches shorter.
Overall very pleased.

Here are the pros:
- Quiet operation.
- Ease of changing speeds.
- Smooth.
- Well Built.
- Integrated light

What I would like to see improve or added feature:
-Depth stops are OK, nothing new here, I would have liked either a digital readout or at least a adjustable depth readout like the delta
-Better chuck, I already upgraded mine.

What I really did not like:
THE FENCE AS TO BE A JOKE!
but it is several degrees of magnitude better than the bench top model I used for years ...
Andrew HAugust 16, 2015
A big splurge for me to buy this, but it is several degrees of magnitude better than the bench top model I used for years and hated every time I turned it on. This machine - every time I turn it on, I'm amazed by the power, the smoothness, and the impressive quality of engineering that went into it.
QUALIY in design and workmanship.

This drill press says QUALITY in workmanship and design. I should probably have given it only 4 stars but everything else about it is so superior it earned the extra. Why would I deduct a star, because the table doesn't have an added "X" pattern for additional hold downs of the work and the existing hold down slots for the fence should take standard hold downs like Infinity and many others. The speed control is so easy to use that I now understand how deficient I was with my old unit in changing speeds, the result is better holes and increased bit life. The two work lights are perfect with no shadows and the laser cross works with pin point accuracy. It is a heavy beast so bring along 2 strong friends for assembly so you can properly direct them. A tip, put the head on a bench and tilt the stand it lines up rather easily with less muscle power needed.
Poor quality - REVISED

This machine was purchased in a brick-and-mortar store.
After reading mixed reviews on line, I decided to purchase this machine and take my chances. I found the assembly instructions very thorough, easy to follow and the machine was simple to put together.
Attaching the chuck and adapter was easy and the runout was .002" (measured 6 inches below the chuck jaws).
The laser guides were out of adjustment but very easy to recalibrate.
Started the machine and it vibrated so bad that the belt cover started buzzing"¦ The green power light looked like a blur! The vibration was not noticeable below 1500 RPM (or so). Slowed the machine down and let it run a few minutes to see it anything would change but it still vibrated at 1500 RPM and got worse as the speed was increased.
Called Powermatic on 3/11 at 10:59 am EST and got transferred to "someone who is familiar with this machine" left a voice mail.
Powermatic tech called me back on 3/11 at 3:33 PM and told me to put some weight on the base to see if that changes anything. I called him back on 3/11 at 3:41 PM and left a message that 250 lbs. on the base made no difference. I called again on 3/13 at 9:25 AM and left a message.
Powermatic tech finally returned my call on 3/13 at 12:30 PM. He said it was not worth it for them to send someone out to fix the machine but offered for me to take it back to the store where I purchased it and exchange it for a new machine or swap heads. I said I want to see the store's machine under power prior to making that decision.
The machine at the store also vibrated (though not as bad as the one in my shop).
I am astounded by the lack of quality and am returning the drill press for a refund.
Too bad, I really like many of the features of this machine, but this is a defective product and Powermatic is unwilling to fix it.

Update 3/15"¦ Getting ready to take it apart and return it, I noticed that when the chuck was rotated by hand, the digital readout read 250 RPM! Clearly the readout is programmed so that ANY rotation below the minimum is displayed as 250. That got me to thinking that the same might be true of the upper end. This time I increased speed slowly. There is still a minor vibration at 1500 RPM but smooths out at about 2000 RPM. I slowly approached 3000 (on the readout) and the machine did not vibrate, however, I had not hit the "stop" yet. As I continued to crank the speed adjuster, the machine continued to increase speed and began vibrating. The readout did not go above 3000 but you could tell the speed was increasing by the sound, so was the vibration. Not thrilled with the idea of hauling this monster back to the store and curious beyond belief, I reduced the speed until the readout began to drop. No vibration, smooth as silk! I removed the belt cover and noticed the variable speed mechanism has adjustable limit stops at each end. The high speed stop was considerably out of adjustment. With this stop out of adjustment the drive belt was being over tensioned and causing the vibration. After adjusting the stop there are no vibrations at either end of the speed scale. There is still a minor vibration right around 1500 or so that I can only attribute to poor quality machining on the pulleys. I am changing my rating from one star to three, I can't go higher than three stars for several reasons. First, Powermatic was not willing to send someone out to find what took me 5 minutes to diagnose and 10 minutes to fix. Second, the tech could have walked me through the process and I would have been happier than being told to exchange machines. Third, obviously this is a common problem because the second machine (at the store) has the same issue. Fourth, the quality of the machined surfaces on the pullies is poor.
