Totally disappointed in poor quality and sadly returned. Am using a 1960's Royal Safari that beats this all to pieces!

Good solid old fashioned typewriter. No worry about hackers or cyber pirates. It is for a stroke victim and works well for that situation.
Cheap construction, chemical odor, uneven lines.

Alrighty. After using this typewriter for about a week, there are a few things that I have noticed:

1. Odor. This thing emits a chemical smell when you open up the packaging. I suspect it will linger for weeks if you don't let the machine air-out, outside of its case/.

2. Packaging. This comes with a fitted black case, similar to an cheap instrument case. I say cheap because I wouldn't trust the hinges to remain closed with the typewriter in there if I dropped it, and I certainly wouldn't trust this case to airport baggage. It does fit the machine, and would be a great way to store it in a closet.

3. Writability: Writing on a typewriter is different than using a keyboard. (No surprise there). As with most, you have to hit one key at a time. This typewriter requires light-to-medium key force to cleanly strike the page, which it never failed to do, but didn't do in a straight line.

For almost $150, you'd really expect more.

Overall, I would say that the construction of the typewriter is mediocre-to-poor. The outer casing is cheap black plastic, and the only metal pieces are on the carriage, or contained below the top panel. While using the machine, the ribbon failed to reverse direction upon reaching the end of the spool. I had to open the cover and manually reposition it.

The machine has 3 ink settings. One red, one black, and one inkless striking mode (for creating a carbon-copy page). There is also a slider-lever, which adjusts the pressure required to strike the page. (I couldn't tell a difference between (+) and (-), but perhaps a more experienced user might notice.)

Overall, this would be a great machine to mess around with, or for use as a childs-plaything, but if you're looking for a typewriter to compose the next "A Farewell to Arms", or "Carrie," I would suggest that you seek out a vintage machine.

Will yours work? Flip a coin.

I really wanted to like this typewriter. The mixed reviews suggested that whether or not one receives a functioning model or not is a coin flip. I lost.

I don't mind that it is lightweight or constructed with thin plastic. It is quite simply not usable because the spacing is all wrong. It seems to add on average at least five extra spaces per line - right in the middle of words, not when one uses the space bar. Also, the letters a, w, and q did not leave a sufficient impression. I am including a photo to demonstrate the results.

If you want a Royal typewriter with a better chance of functioning you're better off looking for a vintage 1930's model. I'm just happy my return was easy.
