I purchased this slow feeder for my 75lbs Chocolate Lab Chip. Ever since we got him he's been a super fast eater. Normally he doesn't even chew he just gobbles 2 cups of food up in about a minuet flat. We've tried hand feeding him to get him to chew, also tried to place portions of food in different areas to slow him down. All of these attempts were unsuccessful. My wife purchased a slow feeder from a local pet store and tried it on our other smaller chocolate lab and while it did slow her down, it was nothing matched to the one from Outward Hound. The feeder from Outward Hound slowed my buddy Chip down from 1 minuet flat to about 4-5 mins eating time. He doesn't look so bloated after eating anymore! While he may be upset at me that he can't eat so fast, i'm sure his belly feels better that he's somewhat chewing rather than swallowing food whole.
I'd recommend this feeder to anyone that has issues with speed eaters! I will be purchasing another one for our second lab but just the smaller size.
PROS:
- Wavy design helps slow down dogs by making it more challenging than other slow feeders
- Easy to clean, soap and water does the trick. Also looks to me dishwasher safe
CONS:
- The dog I purchased this for is a male, I wish the feeder was offered in a different color than Purple.
- I wish the bottom of the dish was a little grippier, once the dogs start to get to the end of the dish, he's pushing it all over the floor to get the remaining pieces.

Excellent bowls to make dogs eat more slowly and provide some mental stimulation when eating

These dog bowls are amazing! This version has larger spaces so it's easier for my dog to get the food than in the spiral and the flower shape one but for a dog with a large snout or bit tongue this is still effective. My smaller dog (45lb) doesn't get much of a challenge with this shape, but the larger one does. My dogs had gotten in to a competitive eating thing all of a sudden and the younger (4year old) and much bigger one (80lb ridgeback) started eating so fast she vomited every meal. I bought these to force her to slow down. I got three different shapes so I could switch them out to keep eating a challenge which is good mental stimulation for dogs. This completely solved the easing too fast problem. Both dogs adapted easily to using them. These were well worth the money. These bowls do make them drool more when eating but I just throw them in the dishwasher regularly and that takes care of the cleaning.
Best way to slow down a fast eater

Update 9/1/2016:
I have been using this feeder for a few months now and still love it! My puppy has yet to tip it over or spill it and it still continues to slow his eating down. It can get gross sometimes with his slobber after he is done eating but I can give it a quick rinse. Cleaning with the sponge wand I use is a little tough to get in all the divots, but I throw it in the dishwasher every now and then to give it a full cleaning.
Original Review:
I have a 6 month old puppy and he absolutely loves food. He literally will sit there licking his lips when I am pouring his food for him and is the most excited I've ever seen him. He also scarfs down the food as fast as possible which can lead to Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus. I did have a few solutions before trying out this bowl, but the bowl has been the best so far.
Previous Solutions:
My first attempt to slow down my puppy's eating was to add rubber Kong toys to his food bowl so that he would have to eat around them. This worked a little bit and did slow him down; but not very much. My next idea was to turn the food bowl upside down and pour the food in the bottom of the bowl (the bottom of the bowl had a canyon-like shape around the edges). This worked much better than the Kongs and actually slowed him down quite a bit. I had been using the upside-down bowl method for several months but finally decided to try out a bowl designed for slowing down eating. This bowl worked much better than the upside-down bowl and significantly slowed down my dogs eating. He constantly comes up for air and has to strategically plan where to eat next.
Quality:
The bowl is made with your typical, heavy-duty BPA free plastic and has a very solid feel to it. It is dishwasher safe, which is great, because cleaning this bowl with a sponge is much more difficult due to the walls.
Overall this is a great bowl if you want to slow down your dog's eating! The picture I attached that shows the bowl with food has 1 cup of food in it. There is room for a little more food, but the listing advertises it can hold 2 cups which may be a little much. 2 cups would likely have the food to the brim. This isn't an issue for me since my dog gets 1 cup per meal so it works out great. So far I have not had the issue that other reviewer's stated where their dog learned to turn the bowl upside-down to get all the food out. I did notice that once my dog finished the food, he was sniffing for more and attempted to pick it up with his teeth. I took the bowl away immediately and now keep it off the floor when not being fed so he doesn't learn to flip it over.

Henry wasn't too sure about this at first... but he figured it out.

Fantastic! Does exactly what I needed it to do.
In case you are wondering - this size (large) will hold 4 cups of dry dog food. I couldn't find that answer anywhere so I bought the big one. I would have bough the smaller one if I knew that.

I hate, Hate, HATE this Bowl !!!!!

I hate, Hate, HATE this bowl !!!!!! I used to be able to wolf my dinner down in 20 seconds flat. BANG! and it was gone. So what I went to the vet once or twice for bloat - who cares! Ize like to eat, and Ize like to eat fast.
Now with this 60's retro psychedelic shaped safety orange dish, I have to work to get every piece of kibble. It takes me 10 minutes now to eat a 20 second dinner. Its downright humiliating. The shame - oh, the shame!
Hmmm. Come to think about it, I haven't been to the vet for a while. Phhhhhht. Just coincidence, I'm sure.
