The first one started dying within a month of purchase. Great and returned it and I have a new one. So far it's been working for the week I've had it.
I tried to troubleshoot than the original one, but I had no luck with that. It started working intermittently and freezing for my chickens. Then it quit altogether.
If you purchase this item, Please be aware that you might be replacing it. I had to replace mine when it was 15 degrees outside.

Works Perfectly! Makes for Efficient Set-Up.

This is our third (and, finally, successful!) attempt to provide ice-free drinking water for our chickens. We've tried versions of plastic waterers, which were very hard to clean and fill without unplugging and dragging the whole unit out of the coop almost every day, so going with the base heater with the additional metal waterer on top, which can easily be lifted and carried into a warm environment for filling and cleaning, has been the most efficient setup for us. Also, I'm not a fan of using heated plastic anyway, as chemicals can leach into the water. The temp has been in the teens and this has been working great. It has the added benefit of raising the water about three inches higher off of the bottom on the coop, which has avoided almost all mess falling into the water. It also adds a little heat to the coop. Nice product.
Stays on all the time and heats the water. ...

Stays on all the time and heats the water. Yes, it has kept the water from freezing but the chickens do not care for the warm, almost hot, water. So the supposed thermostat is a joke. The only reason I gave 2 stars was because it does keep the water from freezing even in minus conditions which we get a lot in north western Montana.
Works on plastic

I have this under another brands plastic waterer and it seems to be working. I placed it on bricks with a layer of plywood on top to make a stable surface but I am pleased with how it works so far. We will find out after this weekend, it is supposed to get down to zero.
UPDATE: We have had nights as cold as -20 and there is at least a small place that is thawed in the morning. I bought the Harris Farms EZ Fill Poultry Drinker, 6.25 Gallon and use with it and I wish I would have bought the pair a long time ago. The other waterer had a rubber seal and it wouldn't seal in the super cold water. The Harris waterer uses a float and avoids this problem. I can't recommend either item any higher.
