No More Dye For Me!
The Frugal Baglady✓ Verified PurchaseFebruary 4, 2018
This was 1st time using Henna. I am allergic to many chemicals in dyes and other hair products. I read pretty extensively about Henna, and tried to heed warnings of companies not using all pure ingredients, but adding dangerous chemicals that have caused harm. I decided on The Henna Guys due to claims of none of these added, it being dated for freshness, and double packaged in foil bag. I purchased the dark brown kit, which entails a 2step application process to properly achieve results. I mixed both separately, using 1/2 water and 1/2 lemon/vinegar/red wine mixture. I left overnight on counter with cling wrap. Next day, I applied the Pure Henna 1st. I left on 31/2 hrs. It made my hair a bright I Love Lucy orange/red. I considered keeping it that way! I placed the Dark brown mix in fridge overnight to decide. Next morning I applied the dark brown. I didn't want total dark brown, but somewhere in between with a highlight effect. I braided my hair into sections, then applied, so that the dark brown would not penetrate fully. I left on for 2 1/2hrs. Both times it rinsed out well, and once rinsed, absolutely no more bleeding. Rinsed again with conditioner, and saw no color rinsing out. Also, no pillow staining. I am so happy not feeling any scalp irritation at all, unlike dyes. It covered grays extremely well even with only 1st application. I Love this Henna, and so do those around me. Great product, sister ordering too
Love it!

I have natural hair that hasn't been dyed or chemically processed in 4 years but has some heat damage. My natural hair color is medium ash brown with some highlighted areas in the front as i happen to spend some time in the sun. Recently i had been trying to build a deep red color into my hair with hibiscus flowers however i realized the process was taking longer than I expected. The first pictures are my hair before the process but after several treatments of the hibiscus. The second picture is in my bathroom under my heat light. Most of the following pictures will be in that lighting. I bought the burgundy pack. Once I made the mixture I didn't let it sit to process as the instructions in the package said that wasn't necessary for the burgundy or red hennas, however I contacted the henna guys after noticing some contradicting information on the website and they said that the henna should be left to process for 8 to 10 hours for dye release before placing on hair. I did two strand tests to determine the mixture I wanted to use. When I just used black tea the test came out more of an auburn color so I changed the liquid mixture and did a second. I was satisfied with the results. Here's the liquid mixture I used: I made 4 oz of earl grey tea, steeped 1 cup of hibiscus flowers in 8 oz of water, and made 10 oz of dark roast coffee. Per 2 tbsp of henna powder I added 1 tbsp of each liquid for a 2:3 powder to liquid ratio. I didn't add ACV as I read the acid can sometimes react with the alkaline indigo. It took almost an hour to put the mixture onto my hair and I feel like I didn't get it to cover every strand. It started to dry in some places so it got difficult to do. Next time I will add a little more liquid as I think my cake batter consistency was more on the thick side. I left it in my hair overnight for 10 hours and then rinsed with conditioner till the water ran pale orange. I put Cantu coconut curling cream on afterwards as my hair felt extremely dry and I detangled my hair. The second three hair pictures were from immediately after rinsing and after I put the Cantu on and placed my hair in a ponytail. The third picture was after I cowashed my hair approximately 28 hours after rinsing the henna out and blow dried it. I then did a flexi rod set, touching up some areas that were frizzy with my straightener and the remaining pictures are the result. 3 days later the color remains the same. It came out exactly how I wanted it. I will update this review after a week.
Great for Gray Coverage

I would definitely order this henna again. I am a regular henna user and I use it to cover up my gray hair I normally use a brand of henna called red raj from another online retailer. This bag of henna colored my Gray's a fantastic bright burgundy while leaving my black hair black. The ingredients say it does contain indigo. I normally apply coconut oil to my hair and scalp prior to a henna treatment I am not sure if I did not apply enough because I did get the dry scalp that sometimes appears with henna treatments. This brand also says to wash hair with conditioner and then shampoo about 24 hours later. I am extremely happy with this. It was easy to apply and I also felt like it washed out better than my normal brand.
Great product! You definitely don't need to use all ...

Great product! You definitely don't need to use all the powder in one application. You could probably get 3-4 out of each bag. It's a little time consuming with two applications but the color was worth it. A very rich brown for me without an orange tint in the sun.
Completely exceeded my expectations

This review is for the red/orange henna pack.

I am so pleased with how my hair turned out! I have been dyeing my hair red for several years now, and while I really enjoy being a redhead, the dyes do eventually take a toll on one's hair. The ends of my hair are damaged, and as a result they lose vibrance quite quickly after a couple washes while the hair closer to the roots stays bright.

I decided to try henna in an attempt to be a little gentler on my hair, but I was worried that it wouldn't take, or would be uneven. With faded ends, bright red middle and fringe, and dark blond roots, it was a lot to expect from some powdered plants. But this henna DELIVERED.

I wanted a warm, gingery red, so I ordered the red/orange pack. It arrived in two days. I mixed up the whole 100 grams with warm water, a couple tbsp of lemon juice, and a bit of lavender oil to soften the earthy smell. Then, I let it sit for about an hour and a half while my "test lock" (saved from a very recent hair cut) marinaded. I washed the test lock after only an hour, but even after such a short time the hair was noticeably brighter.

With some trepidation, I slathered it on my hair starting at the roots, popped on the shower cap, and waited for four hours.

I'll have to update this when the color has had a day or two to mature, but my first impression right out of the shower is WOW! I am really happy with how vibrant it is and how even the color is - no dividing line between the hair that was previously dyed and the roots. I will definitely be sticking with henna if it means I can save my hair from abuse. I've already stopped styling with heat, but I just can't give up having red hair.
