Perfect Kit for those who want to learn and experiment

If you know exactly what you want or need you probably wouldn't be buying this. So with that assumption...The assortment is fantastic. I had a project in mind and a general desire to be able to experiment and learn. I had nothing more than an idea of what transistors did. After reading the small booklets describing the general differences in the types of transistors and diodes and looking up the datasheets (They give you a link) They gave me exactly what I needed to create and understand the H-bridge I needed for a project me son and I are building.
I can't comment on the exact value of the transistors contained within this kit if purchased separately.. but having what seems to be a pretty good pre-selected assortment AND the simple intro booklets is actually EXTACTLY what I needed.

A lovingly crafted kit, but sorely missing a better selection of MOSFETs

Let me start with a positive: the included booklets with sample circuits and an explanation of some of the principles of electronic circuits are a very nice touch! The selection of diodes is well thought-out, too, and the markup for the kit is pretty low.
Now, for the downside: for a general-purpose set, this sorely lacks a power MOSFET or two (they aren't expensive this day and age, and appear all over the place in hobby projects!). The only MOSFET in the box is 2N7000, which is fairly old and crummy. In contrast to the missing MOSFETs, the specialized 1 kV or 5 GHz NPN transistors strike me as far less useful.

I bought this kit years ago and I still use it to this day. I can't list the times I have gone to buy some weird transistor part and thought "Hmm, I'd better check to see if it's in my kit first" and found that it was indeed!
It has a ton of the basics and a few of the extra weird ones. I may never know what a "Hyperabrupt tuning varactor" is, but if I need one, I got it!
As one other commenter mentioned, there are only 6 individual MOSFETs in this kit, so if you really want to get into EE then you might consider adding some of those of your own.

I purchased this set for my (electronic musical instrument) repair shop in order to have a backup supply of commonly used components. it is very convenient to have a good back stock of these components to access quickly and not have to wait on an order for one small resistor (or cap, or diode, or transistor - depending on the kit - I bought one box of each to start with) Obviously, these just scratch the surface, but are a good starting point to have on hand.
Each component is packaged in multiples, each in a separate, neatly labeled, bag. each box has relevant basic information on the underside of the lid, explaining, for instance, how to read the color code on a resistor - or whatever is appropriate to the kit you purchased.
I am pleased with the kit, and already have used a handful of components. It was nice not having to wait for an order to arrive or try to fill up on things I may not need to hit my minimum order amount from my supplier.
Each component is packaged in multiples, each in a separate, neatly labeled, bag. each box has relevant basic information on the underside of the lid, explaining, for instance, how to read the color code on a resistor - or whatever is appropriate to the kit you purchased.

All of the Joe Knows kits are more expensive than if you just order from a vendor in China, but they are worth it.
I have several of these kits for semiconductors, resistors, inductors, capacitors and other small parts. They are organized in little plastic bags with labels. These are 4 - 10 times more expensive than the ones from China, but the box, bags, labels and sorting make it way more convenient. If I was doing something other than repairs or simple prototypes, like a run of 100 - 1000 pieces, I would be looking a bulk purchases instead of these.
