First one lasted over 10 years!
Matthew HodgsonJune 21, 2017
This is actually a replacement of the same gate we purchase over 10 years ago. Nothing has changed with the gate design or quality and it is exciting! I literally unscrewed the old one and this mounted using the same screws and drill pattern. Our old gate was only retired after surviving 4 crazy dogs and 3 children who would climb it, 'ride' it, slam it and all that other stuff that makes parents twitch.

Looking forward to many years with the new gate, mainly for the dogs now.
As expected

We bought this for the opening between our kitchen and living room. For our dogs. We have two small dogs and one big dog. Its nice to be able to block them off when we have company so they aren't jumping on everyone. Or for when I'm bring groceries in and don't want to have to worry about them rubbing out the door . it can slide to block or move back out of yhe way, it also can swinh open and has a latch to lock which is easy to use but ofxourse it is tight at first and needs to be worked a little for easier access. also our big dog is still a puppy in age but not size so we are working on the chewing things and this us nice to keep him blocked off when were gone for more than an hour at a time. So overall were Happy with our purchase and its exactly as expected!
From the center line of the hinge side to the center line of latch side there is a 3 inch offset.

Very nice, good fit. But required a little remodeling to really install. From the center line of the hinge side to the center line of latch side there is a 3 inch offset. So this doesn't just fit straight across a door way. because the 4 parts stack the width (1") of each section is offset from the hinge. AND the latch must mount straight in or it won't work/latch. So you MUST mount the center line of the latch/locking side 3 inches offset from the center line of the hinge. Most "doorways" don't have that much space to work with. But the span and strength of this gate makes the 'remodeling' worth it. The 'remodeling' was to add a 2x4 on the inside to mount the latch on. The 1 inch gained from the 2x4 (mounted on the inside) and the 1.5 inches off center the other way within the door frame for the hinge side makes for a nice solid easy to use gate.
Terrible!

This gate is horrendous. I have an almost identical gate at the top of my stairs. It's at least 12 years old now and has been amazing, so it seemed like a safe bet to buy two more for other wide areas I wanted to block off. Such a mistake that I had to return them.

Firstly, these gates are so stiff they are at times almost impossible to extend or retract, and had my husband swearing like a sailor. Or maybe worse; I hear sailors are quite polite these days. I was afraid the gate would break as I tried to heave it open or closed.

One area has base boards, so I mounted above the base board. Because of the issue with stiffness, we often resorted to just leaving the gate extended and swinging it open that way. The problem with that idea is that the gate is so heavy that it would droop, putting pressure on the gate and the wall fixtures.

The other area had a shorter span, but that meant that because of the concertina nature of the gate, it was going diagonally across the space, which made it difficult to latch.

The instructions say to only install into wood or steel. Ours were both mounted into steel, and both ripped out of the wall within a day or two because of all the issues mentioned above. They were, as He Who Shall Not Be Named would say, a total disaster. I had to return them. Sad.
Eh. Great price, does what it's supposed to, but ...

It's an inside doorway gate. You can see from the picture that it's four panels slide open to extend. So the cool part is you can install the gate from a fairly small size to a much larger size. The description says 62 inches. My opening is 63, and I was able to get it installed. You can slide the door panels closer together, and they slide together in such a way that they stack up against each other.
The pros - It does the job. It swings both ways. That part is awesome. It swings open, so you can open it as wide as you want to. And that's awesome too. I have another gate - one of those metal actual gate things, and it only opens out 18 inches (have you ever tried carrying a squirming toddler and opening one of those and sliding through? Ugh.) So it opens as wide as you need it to, because you can swing it open, and it swings very, very smoothly. So all pluses.
But there's one minus, and it's a very big minus, in my book. You can't close it with one hand. You have to put down everything in your arms (including said squirming toddler) and then pull the door toward the other end, and then lift it about two inches and then slam it down. It latches nicely, but sheesh. Whoever designed this apparently has no clue that mommies of crawling babies or mischievous toddlers almost never walk around with free arms around the house, that they are always busy ...
Do I regret buying it? No, because it's a great price - there's nothing out there for 63 inches at this price. But I do wish it could be closed with one hand.
