Picks up EVERYTHING!
Katie•December 26, 2017
So much easier and less back breaking than picking up any old fashion way! Only thing is that even after you've blown away the leaves as best as you can, it still picks up a ton of leaves and little sticks. So you have to stop and clean it out every so often.
Five Stars

Perfect every thing I could expect
This crazy picker works!

I tried 'em all - raking, vacuuming, hand-picking, and even ignoring those damned acorns. But the crop of 2017 was just overwhelming, and I finally decided to take a risk and order a machine made to pick up those stubborn nuts. Guess what? It works!
I was as skeptical as anyone about this machine. First of all, it's expensive. I then noticed that all of the on-line videos showed the picker doing its thing on astro-turf or working through sparse grass. Except for the many thousands of acorns dropped from my 75 foot oaks, I have a nice lawn and I had my doubts about the Bag-a-Nut product being able to reach into the grass. To my immediate surprise, I discovered it can do just that. While it's not perfect, it can pull acorns hidden among the turf. Within minutes the hopper is full and ready to be emptied. It's still hard work, and often requires many passes over the same areas. But the work is far easier than the old rake, rake, rake, and collect by hand. It's actually kind of fun to see those acorns riding up the nut roller and dropping into the basket.
The folks at Bag-a-Nut told me they will be introducing a weight bracket to add a bit of downward pressure to aid in grassy areas. I can attest that the collection does seem to work better as the hopper becomes full, adding weight to the process. However, the picker is far easier to maneuver when empty. So we'll have to see how this improvement works out.
Just a couple of caveats to mention. The picker cannot help with acorns that have been pushed into the turf from mower wheels or foot traffic. Also, clumps of acorns that settle in any grass-less low spot can still be problematic. I suspect the smaller pickers work a little better with uneven turf. But overall the 18" picker seems perfect for my lawn. Some reviewers indicated a pick ratio of about 80%. I would say it does much better than that, but requires multiple passes on heavily covered areas to finish the job. It also doesn't do too much with the detached acorn caps (or acorn "hats" as my granddaughter calls them). A tool like this makes keeping up with the acorns week by week more practical than raking. Instead of picking once at the end of the drop, next year I might sweep through after each mowing, hopefully, catching more acorns before they're embedded into the soil.
I do not generally endorse on-line products. But I am genuinely happy with my purchase of this picker. With the worst acorn drop in many years awaiting my cleanup, the Bag-a-Nut product is making my efforts more productive, easier on my lawn, and far less exhausting.

We haven't used it much since the acorn season was over when we ordered it. I hope it will be just the right thing!
