Awkward placement of holes

The left thumb hole is drilled at a spot that makes this instrument impossible to hold properly for playing.

It's okay. For the about the same money, you can get the better Yamaha YRF-21 Fife, which is pretty much the same (makes me wonder if the Woodi USA one is a knock off of the Yamaha). Neither of these are true fifes, btw, but are essentially soprano recorders (German fingering, I believe) with a side-blown flute hole. Good for learning how to play a side-blown flute but not having to spend a lot of money. I researched a bit more on the Woodi items, and they are decent knock-offs of more expensive items. I've reviewed the Woodi USA irish whistles, as well.
For a true, inexpensive but good actual fife, get the metal one from American Plating. It costs only a little more, and is a superb value for the quality of instrument you get.
Edit 9/20/16: Actually, on principal, I'm not really happy with these companies that make knock-offs of genuine, trademarked instruments. Amazon needs to stop carrying these.
