This product has a lot of great features. It reads temps well but as noted you have to be about 8" from the item which at times is difficult in my environment. I like it that it is compact, LCD is easy to read. Still figuring out how to read temps on stainless but that will work out.
Two items I don't like. 1) is the 9 volt battery. I have found after you change a few of these that the connector becomes susceptible to breaking. 2) the cover for the battery (on the trigger side of the handle) will not stay closed. Not sure how to fix that one.
Over all a good buy for the price, good capabilities without breaking the bank.

seems like a good quality product and very accurate. I pointed it at 3 different indoor/outdoor digital thermometers and the readings were very close to the other digital readouts. did bunch of other PRACTICAL tests and got relatively accurate readings. pointed it at my car's radiator hose (after the engine was warm & thermostat was open) and to my surprise it was within couple of degrees of what the car was displaying!!!
I have had it for several months now and recommend it.
The battery is also very easy to access, i mention this since someone had complained in one of the reviews ...

Had it for 3 years now. I use this every single day in the winter on the wood stove.
I was also doing another project where checking the temp was important. this worked great.
no problems. it doesn't eat batteries. and they will last longer if you don't use the back light.
But I use the back light every time and it still does fine with batteries.
There's the setting on the thing for different surfaces. get familiar with that. it makes a big difference for accuracy.
If you need something to register higher temps than about 1200...this isn't what you want because that's about where it seems to stop.
but....other than that. I love it.

Lately, I am seeing a snow storm in my drawer freezer in my Refrigerator. I use the gun to find the air leaks in the seal around the door.
We started putting insulating foil in the attic. So far we got the west side done because that is the side that gets the afternoon heat. As the job progressed I was able to determine if the foil made a difference in keeping out the heat. Testing the finished and unfinished areas on that side with the gun I found a 20 to 30 degree difference. Who knew? Now I'm not reluctant to do the rest of the attic.
I'm going to get one for my son for his birthday. He lives in the frozen north.

For such a low price, it has very good accuracy (checked it against a known calibrated thermometer) and good features.
However, to do so you must have set the emissivity correctly. There is a very handy table in the manual along with detailed instructions on how to adjust it. The manual should be always in the unit's carrying case holster with the unit itself, for that purpose. Also, for instructions to change other features like F to C, for instance.
However, the carrying holster is trapezoidal in shape, much like a gun's, and the manual has a rectangular footprint. Therefore it does not fit.
Having made the holster a little wider or the manual a little shorter could have solved the problem.
I give it 4 1/2 stars for that reason.
