Good luck aligning it to work poperly
Ngxx37•June 27, 2017
If you have parking sensors beware, it may interfere with the sensor sometime my parking sensor will go off at slow bumper to bumper clawing speeds. I ended up bending my licenses plate slightly to clear the front senors so it doesnt fire off as much. For my car if i didnt do that then at slow speeds it will trigger parking sensors all the time, after i modified it it's much less frequent now. But still for something that cost so much you really shouldnt have to put up with it. I have 16 mk7 golf r with the driver assist. Good luck aligning it to work poperly. I would not buy this again, i should have just drilled my bumper and call it a day.
Good product, some annoyance with front parking sensors
Jasper Rafters•June 23, 2017
3 stars specifically for use on a 2017 Golf R, would be a higher rating without front parking sensors. I think the construction is of good quality, and it was easy to mount after I bought a 3/4" socket. Others have mentioned it's a bit fiddly to position, but it wasn't too hard to find a good initial center.
With front parking sensors, you'll want to switch the car's default so you only have the sensors trigger while in parking mode -- getting triggers in traffic is annoying. Assume I'd get less triggers if I bent the license plate some, but I've reached a 'good enough' balance without that.
Over the course of a few months, the mount has moved back into place for triggering the sensors a few times. At least one time only getting triggers while braking, so I believe it's from driving around rather than getting knocked by anyone. By now I can eyeball it back into place; although I wish there was a way to lock into place the current design also means there's no hinge or whatever to fail under stress.
One other frustration that's on the sensor behavior -- even when you're not getting triggers in dry conditions, rain can cause a trigger. I've seen triggers off both sides of the front plate at the same time when the car's wet. Not sure I want to figure out how much the plate would need to bend to avoid that.

Great alternative to the conventional center-mounted license bracket!

It's a great solution to avoid the center mount and related damage you'd normally do to the front bumper. Using the tow-hook location is smart ... and the Platypus component parts worked perfectly and are of high quality. Due to the (very active) park sensors on my '17 Golf R, a little "tuning" was needed; and, I solved it by gently (off the car) placing a vertical bend in the bracket (over a piece of PVC pipe) about a third of the way in from the left edge (facing the bracket from the front of the car) ... a bend that essentially allows the bracket to match the contour of the bumper ... and a bend that allows the bracket and plate to "clear" the vision area of the sensors. Separately gave the license plate and a frame the same bend treatment - then assembled the three. End result is a custom look in the off-center location. It's good solid hardware that has been car wash-tested several times with no damage.I would definitely purchase it again.
Works as advertised but ...

The mount is built with very good materials and comes packaged nicely. Unfortunately, with my MK7 Golf R with the Driver's Assistance Package and the fact the mount becomes just slightly loose after a few days of driving it is always setting off my parking sensors. Every time I stop I need to turn off the parking assist. This would have been a GREAT mount if the parking sensors weren't where they are. I'm taking off 1 star for the fact I was told it would be compatible with the parking sensors (which it is, for exactly 1-3 days at most). The other star was removed due to the fact that it's not very static and is not removable for car washes. I expected to set it and forget it but it was always needing to be adjusted and fiddled with. Overall, if you don't have parking sensors, I think you will be VERY happy with this product. If you do have them and you buy this, I hope you have better luck than I have.
Looks great on a 2016 R

I bought a "Used - Very Good" condition Platypus from CravenSpeed here, and it came in great condition and with all parts included. Install was very easy, all you need to supply is a socket wrench. I really like how close it sits to the bumper. You can opt to bend the metal further and push it further away, but I like the flush look. I made sure that in the event that the plate did spin, it wouldn't scrape the bumper, but it's on there pretty tight, I don't think it's going anywhere.
I don't have parking sensors so I can't comment on that. I also don't take the car through touch car washes so I can't weigh in on that issue either. Read some other reviews if those conditions apply to you.
I considered docking a star for price because it does feel like a lot of money for a piece of metal, but honestly it's cheaper than the competition and it looks just as good, so I can't complain much.
