The must have aquarium canister filter for a fraction of the cost of well known brands
Linda Caricofe•December 27, 2016
keeps the aquarium water clear , this is a must have filter
I was a fan of Fluval, until after a year, each of my Fluval filters ( the 400 series AND the super big AND high cost filter ) needed parts after a year of use.
It was less expensive to buy this filter than order new parts for the Fluval.
I have a 90 gallon and a 75 gallon tank, that holds huge fancy goldfish, and, each aquarium is home to a Pleco too.
It has a few drawbacks as far as the intake valve needs to be submerged completely to avoid air bubbles...but, once you remember that, and keep the aquarium water filled to the U shape that the intake valves are connected to, you will have a beautiful clean aquarium...and best of all, this filter holds as much media as you want..roomy trays.
2 thumbs up, a solid 10 BEST BUY filter.

This was purchased as a replacement for one of two canister filters of the same brand that have been in use for four years now, 24/7 365. For the price I have no complaints. The instructions are a little hard to understand and I suggest doing some research online for help setting these up but they are pretty straight forward to set up. I chose not to use the provided intake plumbing and bought CPVC from one of the hardware stores making my own that fit my 55 gallon tank to my liking. Finding replacement media online is the best option and is really inexpensive. I would suggest having extra on hand so you are not scrambling to buy more once you notice the water flow has decreased to the point you need to clean out the filter and replace media.
I replaced both canisters within a couple of months of each other primarily because the impeller was showing signs of wear and I decided it was worth the expense to buy new canisters since the price is really affordable. Over that period of four years of ownership though they both ran like champs and never once let me down. There are other canister filters available that cost more and have more recognizable name brands but honestly for the money these are a great value you won't be disappointed in.

Great Canister Filter for a Budget!
Ethan Wangerin•August 11, 2016
This is a fantastic filter. I had a 40 gallon tank that used to belong with a complete setup from Petsmart and had an older style filter. It barely did the job and I found it to be noisy with the water. I bought Penn Plax canister filters for my 2 55 gallon tanks and it worked so well. Great water quality and crystal clear. I decided to start up the 40 gallon and wanted to get a newer filter but also not spend as much as I did with the Penn Plax. This was like $32 cheaper for me and seems to work about the same. The setup has the 3 baskets as well and the 2 hoses for intake and output. Where this filter really shines though is the amount of media this filter comes with. It has more than enough filter floss, ceramic media, carbon, and bio balls. It is also completely silent. The only things I preferred with the Penn Plax is the tubes for the spray bar and intake. These are smaller and seem more light weight and cheap plastic. Nothing to really take a star away because it still does the job, but I did notice it. Overall, it's a great canister filter at a great price. It works flawlessly on my 40 gallon and I would imagine it doing well even with a 55 gallon. Very satisfied with the purchase.
It simply moves water through a set of media to elimiate solid waste and unwanted the chemicals in a fish tank
Rottvan•August 4, 2016
What is a filter? It simply moves water through a set of media to elimiate solid waste and unwanted the chemicals in a fish tank. If you agree on this, then the rest is simple. What makes a good filter good is not the filter, it's the media inside it. If you want an affordable canister fitler, this is the one. If you want an affordable and effective canister filter, then you have to buy your own media. I got 2 kg of Biohome media and Generic Fish Pong Foam Filter Sponge Set for $55. Still much a much better deal then the top rated canister filter without the best media.

Works great, I didn't need the instructions until it was time to turn it on. I'm using it in my turtle tank which only has about 35 gallons of water. So I needed a lot of filtration but I didn't want too much gph. What I did was stuff extra filtration media into it to slow the water flow rate. It worked perfect. I have sponges on the bottom then a cloth screen with bio balls and a large nitro-sorb pouch in the middle tray and the activated carbon and ceramic rings in the top tray. The skimmer is a nice touch since turtle water can get pretty cruddy. For the next cleaning I'll probably remove some media to increase the flow a tiny bit. Tank is crystal clear. I've been keeping fish for over 12 years and this thing is super quiet. Instructions are worded a little odd but if you have any idea how a canister filter works then you should be more than fine. I did make an adjustment to the tubing for the skimmer, I cut them since my water level isn't at the top of the tank. Once I set up my 125 gallon tank again I'll definitely be getting a sunsun for it. Can't beat the price for the value.
