To protect the water pressure in the house from going too high.If you have a back flow preventer or check valve on the main water entry, the problem could be the hot water tank when heating with no water used will cause the pressure to rise.Get a pressure gauge that screws on to the hose bibb and attach anywhere in the house to test.To solve this problem you would need a "potable water expansion tank".To properly test pressure rise ,let the hot on the bath tub or faucet run for about 8 minutes and don't use water while test is on.Watch gauge.
Great quality, no leaks

Installed this after my original valve let loose and left 2 inches of water in my basement. It went on very easily with some Teflon tape and a small pipe wrench. After it was installed I spun off the cover cap, adjusted the screw to 125 psi by counting the turns, and spun the cap back on (I also labeled 125 psi with a marker on the valve). It's been on for about two months now and no signs of any leaking. Very happy with the quality.
Not right for bypass srpayer

Nice part, nice brass, not much to complain about. Didn't work as a bypass regulator for my tree sprayer, it's too small. For the sprayer application you need to find the one made from plastic that has 3/4" input threads, that one does the job.
Does what it is supposed to do!

I installed this relief valve and set the relief point at 80-85 psi to keep my household system below 85 psi to protect my RO water filtration unit that has a pressure limit of 85 psi. The relief valve starts opening (dribbling) at 80 psi and pressure remains below 85 psi. As pressure increases, the dribbling increases. Now if my pressure reducing valve should fail open, my system is protected.
