It ain't what it's cracked up to be. I have been sucking at this skill for a few years but I can successfully fix things now whereas a few years ago it was a metal melting circus of "what the hell, it's already broken, let's see if I can fix it" approach. And now I have added this to the arsenal only recently. Holy hell. The soldering tips I could have saved. When I am done after a big project, cleaning and re-tinning the tip makes it look new. Unbelievable. But without someone formally teaching me the ways and wonders of soldering, I am left to my own devices so I'll give myself a break, but this is my favorite discovery second only to solder paste which got my success rate jumpstarted. I can now use filament wire successfully, but the paste helped me to understand adhesion better. And when it's tricky, comes in handy. So Yay for tip tinner. 11 stars.

This is basically a powdered solder and flux mix. Heat your iron stick the tip in it and wipe off the excess. Results are a perfectly tinned tip.
