WOW! This was the best birthday gift ever for our son! He never flew a remote drone before, but was flying it like a pro within a few hours. Had to charge battery the first day, but he had it up and flying the next afternoon (after reading the manual)
We purchased the blade guards, and they work really well (not as others have reported) and it doesn't seem to drag it down at all. We also purchased an extra battery.

Starting to Have Second Thoughts about this.....

Works as expected. Some minor assembly needed, and the documentation needs work, but the unit works mostly as expected. The battery that came with this unit shut down unexpectedly on landing. It completely shut off all power, once at about 6", and another time at about 3 feet. I updated the battery firmware and it has been flying without that glitch. One motor quit on me trying to take off, and caused the unit to flip over. After that the motor would only "twitch", and I had to order a new one. Though it USUALLY works as expected, there is that occasional glitch that shakes the confidence quite a bit.

Pros:It's not as sophisticated as this years models, but if you're a hardware person it is like buying a PC vs. a Mac. With replaceable parts and available hardware upgrades it may not be the fanciest or best looking quad, but it does the job and you can upgrade the gimbal and camera with each years revision instead of a whole new quad.
Cons: Is loud as all getup turning on and can take a while to get GPS lock. You have to invest some decent money for FPV and even more for a ground station.

Get the prop guards
Leo Jurgens•April 30, 2015
Get the prop guards! I bought the Phantom 2 after much research. I found it to be the best for beginners along with the Zenmuse gimbal. The picture was perfect. The range outstanding. It tops out at 400 feet above you and shy of a mile away. The whole device is very plug and play friendly. Highly recommended. The motors are delicate though. If you tip or the motors stop suddenly while running, you'll melt the board inside. It's another 15 dollars, but it'd be wise for you to buy the prop guards. They will help reduce the damage to the motor. The drone flew nicely though. Very responsive to controls. ALWAYS calibrate before your flights. My favorite feature is the return home. The drone is intelligent enough to know when it is at "bingo" fuel and when it is, it'll pop up to 66 feet and cruise on over home. You will want to plan accordingly though, because you are locked out while it's cruising home so it could potentially run into something if you're not careful. The landing, when returning home, is plus or minus ten feet so don't take off somewhere where it may damage it on return home.
