First, let's clarify that gold plated means nothing on audio cables. But for a Toslink like this one, it means diddly-squat! Toslink is LED optical. So this product represents peak stupid for gold plating marketing nonsense. Again, means nothing even on actual cables that use wires. But for this, nothing!
Having said that and looking at just the optical part of it"¦
I was in the camp that Toslink is Toslink but, I do detect an improvement over Amazon Basics Toslink I had been using.
If you have a good system, $1000+ in gear, I think it is worth it to go for better Toslink cables.
Also, since this is typically used on Apple Airport Expresses, *if* you stream to it from Apple Music from an iOS device, if you are using an Express V2 (sits on surface), then downgrade the firmware to an Airplay 1 version using Airport Utility app. This will ensure that any audio headed to it will be 16/44. Otherwise, in the case of Apple Music on iOS, it will go to AAC if the Express is Airplay 2 updated.
It is one of the few cases where a downgrade of the firmware results in better sound. Until Apple fixes that issue.
Also, if you can, turn off the Wi-Fi in the Express and just send streaming music over ethernet as much as you can.

All these years with an iMac and I didn't believe the iMac had an optical output at the very back of the headphone jack. I bought this mini-Toslink to Toslink cable and voila, the IMac now shows Digital Out as an audio output option. The sound quality improvement was night and day different. The audio now has more "fullness" in the lower frequency range, so voices sound fuller with more body. This is a subjective description of the sound improvement, but it's definitley better than the analog signal that comes from using a 3.5mm-RCA cable or headphones. Digital output volume is also clearly louder to boot. This is the cheapest investment I've ever made for improving the audio coming from my iMac (without adding a DAC). If you're using a Mac and want better audio quality without getting a DAC, try this. I highly recommend it.
