A Good Training Device
RZKApril 27, 2018
We use these at home to supplement our children's martial arts classes. They're almost perfect. They really replicate the board breaking experience in class. They're really high quality. My only issue is that they're kind of hard to put back together.
Good range of breaking boards

Good training boards. The boards were a little tough, the black one was pretty tough for my kids. I have a 7 and 5 year old that went through the yellow, blue and red pretty easy. The black one stumped them both. With a little practice, they'll get the black one as well. They seem sturdy, and I believe we'll get a lot of breaking sessions out of them. Well worth the money. They have already gained a lot of confidence, and at Tae Kwon Do, when they do breaking there, they are ahead of the curve.
Great "re-brake" boards, should last a long time.

My kids and I love these. It is a set of four, with yellow being the easiest to "break", then blue, red, and, finally, black. The mechanism that holds them together is a simple but ingenious symmetric tongue-and-groove type of joint. The fit is tight, so, it can be a bit tricky to reassemble them after they are "broken," but a bit of practice and maybe a hard surface are usually all that are needed. The colors on the boards are also thin (maybe 1/8th inch) foam and are on both sides. This lets you orient the boards in any direction you like and still have padding.

I'm not much of a martial artist, but I'm a full grown fellow and I can easily punch through the yellow and blue. These are more for kids to build confidence, etc. I can also easily punch through the red, but it will sometimes not break if I am sloppy with my aim or timing, so, I think that would be good for casual adult practice of forms. The black is much thicker and, I believe, at least as hard to break as the few pine boards I have broken in the past. I can punch through the black board too, but maybe only half the time (which is good -- I have a goal to practice toward). They all "break" with a loud and satisfying CRACK. The first few times I was sure I'd actually broken the joints, but it turns out these are very tough and they have, so far, reassembled cleanly each time.

Some folks have said you can combine these (e.g. the yellow and the black, the blue and the red, etc.) for a greater challenge. While I'm sure that's true, I'd be careful about it. Most dojos which combine boards do so with small spacers between them which are not compressible (as is the foam on these). Also, if the center joint of the front board were not aligned with the joint of the board behind it, I think it might be much harder to break. So, in all such cases I'd recommend good warm up, and start with some test kicks (even wearing shoes) until you know how the combined boards behave. They are tough enough to take some experimental abuse, and all an injury is going to do is slow down your training.
Best Set I Have Found

This is the best set of re-breakable boards I've run across in 3 decades of teaching karate. I consider tamishiwara (breaking) a fundamental testing tool and a good teaching tool when properly used. I'm not into the whole "break 20 flaming cinder blocks" or "see how many braced boards you can break with a side kick" thing at all. But single and double breaks of braced and...later...suspended boards are essential. Multiple breaks in sequence and during kata are very important for testing at advanced levels. But we start on the yellow and blue boards fairly early in the curriculum and slowly build from there.
These are AWESOME!!!

These are AWESOME!!! Didn't even know these existed until recently and I bought them for my son and I to practice our karate moves without the expense and effort of finding real wood boards all the time. This has been non-stop entertainment for my son (8 years old) ever since they arrived. He was determined to keep working until he could break the black board (the thickest one).

This has been the perfect way to practice our karate and build confidence. These are so satisfying to break apart and relieve some aggression and boy energy!

The boards break apart and snap (very similar sound to real wood cracking apart). They slip back together pretty easily my son can put them back together himself although they are tight and do take some effort. They feel very sturdy and well made like they will last a long time.

Seriously could not be happier with this purchase....hours of entertainment and exercise!
