Highly effective at controlling a critical variable when pulling shots!
Pompfinatic✓ Verified Purchase•February 20, 2024
I'm impressed with the quality of this tamper and there is no doubt that it is very effective at controlling the variable of
tamp pressure when preparing shots. I was definitely tamping too light prior to using this tool. For me, a good comparison would be the use of a torque wrench for securing a fastener in a critical use situation. Basically, a no
brainer. If you are using quality coffee in a good machine, all you have to do is dial in the grind size to reach a goal of a 2oz shot in 25 seconds. I use 18g of Lavazza Super Crema in my double shot portafilter. Be sure to level the coffee and
apply the 30# tamp. No more guessing! My results are absolutely fantastic! (Profitec Pro 500 PID)
I'm keeping my old tamper as a back-up only since I now have absolute confidence this tools works effectively.
Note: I would rate this 4.5 stars...docking .5 for the price tag. That said, who knows what it's worth? I already love it!

This is pure genius. Instead of putting your bathroom scale on the counter to see what 30 pounds of pressure feels like, get the Espro tamper. The more variables you can control, the more consistent your shot pulling will be. This has been especially helpful because there is more than one person in our home that makes espresso and espresso based drinks. Sure it's pricy but consistency is key to avoid pulling inconsistently tamped shots. We've went through a couple of whole bean coffee trying to dial in our shot pulling. Since using the Espro tamper, we were able to focus on dialing in our grind while keeping all other variables constant. You'll get a quiet audible click as well as feel when you've successfully applied the suggested 30lbs of tamp force.
A perfect fit

I bought this as a gift for my SO. His espresso machine's portafilter is not a standard size and he was frustrated with the provided tamper as it was double sided so not very comfortable. He's also been in hot pursuit of the perfect shot so knowing eliminating the variable of tamper pressure was appealing. He loves the tamper. Mostly because of the comfortable curved handle and perfect snug fit. He's happy with the calibrated function and feels it is useful in training him to know what 20 lbs of pressure feels like. He's been using it for a couple weeks and still raves about how much he loves it.
30 pounds force is not as much as you may think

With the N. Simonelli Musica I have the fit is very good on the factory double basket as well as VST 18, and 20-gram baskets. I have taken to "five pressing"; center, north, south, east, and west to ensure I don't have weak seals around the rim. I'm still dialing in parameters using a bottomless portafilter, so things are still in flux. (My biggest problem is I roast and have many different coffees, different profiles, different densities, all in one day. Because a lot of this is 'new stock' I don't get the luxury of following my presets for a grind. All said I appreciate the small aid - which was a revelation - the Espro 58.35mm demonstrates day in and day out.
Great for the heavy-handed newbie or those seeking consistency

Let me start by saying that if you've been making your own espresso for years and pull a good shot every time, then this tamper is not for you.
However, if you're like me and relatively new to home espresso, then this tamper is your best friend. I love espresso and jumped in blindly when I "impulse" bought an expensive machine and grinder, thinking after a few months of practice, I would be able to make a great latte. Well that wasn't quite the case so I took a class on making espresso (which I recommend to everyone) and they emphasized the importance to dialing in the grinder and packing the grinds evenly. However, my uncalibrated arm just wasn't up to the task of packing the grounds at 30lbs each time, making dialing in the grinder very difficult as well. This tamper takes the packing part out of the equation and makes it much easier to evaluate whether your grounds are ground too fine or coarse, saving time and headache and making the whole experience of trying new beans or playing with the other variables (like temperature, pressure, pre-infusion time, etc) that much more pleasurable.
