Great little radios
dawn✓ Verified Purchase•September 6, 2023
I got me and my husband a set of these based on the ones our rallycross group uses at events. They've got great range (hence the ability to use them at our quite spacious events) and clear sound (well, except in the wind, but not much can beat that). Our particular need came mostly for caravanning to events, so we can communicate between vehicles-- another place their range is awesome.
They're quite easy to use and the battery is very good, but I only gave them 4 stars as if you use the light too much, it really sucks the battery down (as was shown one weekend event where we camped and I used the light to see things I was doing, and my battery tanked while the other was fine) and you do need to read the instructions to get it set up right. It's not overly difficult, but definitely takes a little bit of effort. Charging is really easy though with that great double charger, which I love as it's one charger, it's obvious it goes to it and easier to keep track of than multiple chargers with multiple pieces.
Speaking of reading the manual, I missed the lock feature which is so great! Our event organizer let me know about it, and it's excellent for not accidentally changing channels and other non-advantageous things while running around. It's cool you can pick up weather alerts too, so you're extra sure to know if there is major weather headed your way. Speaking of, the moisture/water sturdiness is a great feature too.
Based on the usage the group's radios get (at least a dozen are used each event by whoever needs one), they're quite sturdy. One of the group's radios has lost the pad over where you push to talk, but somebody could have done who knows what with it-- dropped it out of a car, flung repeatedly onto bad surfaces while running"¦ That they're all holding up as well as they are with so many people and so much likely abuse is quite amazing.
Only complaint would be the clip. It's fine, and how my husband wears his is never a problem, but mens jeans fit much more functionally than women's and mine kept getting knocked off, so I wear it on my lanyard now. It's light enough that it's not a problem.

Best Radio I Ever Used

I have used most if not all the walkies Motorola has made over the past 20 years. I used to use them daily in my job. The current model (MOTOROLA SOLUTIONS Talkabout T460 Rechargeable Two-Way Radio Pair (Dark Blue)), in all its color variations, is by far the best. Do not get scared off by people who have less than positive reviews since Motorola has consistently made the highest quality walkies I have seen. Here are my comments on the issues mentioned in reviews:
Distance Covered: Of course they do not reach 35 miles unless you have a line of sight. However I can tell you my experience is they consistently get around heavy woods and rolling hills for almost a mile. If you need more use a HAM radio.
Not Working Right: If something seems to be working wrong it is probably user error - see the Lockout discussion a few reviews earlier. There are more things these radios do than the average person knows and that is not the radios fault. Kind of like my smart phone.
The Screw in the back: I read a review saying they hated the screw in the back since it was hard to use. OMG it is meant to be opened with any coin but a nickel. You do not need a screw driver. And it keeps it waterproof. It is easy to open.
Battery Use: Thank god no body complained about this. It is great! Motorola says the rechargeable battery should only last 6ish hours. I have gotten 10-11 hours out of a charge without a problem. Of course duracell disposable batteries are about twice that.
I hope this helps.

Good, But ...

The Only issue with these Radios is the Belt Clip , it's a removable type Cheap Plastic, snap retainer that is very small & thin that snaps into place, if bumped could break off potentially releasing the radio to hit the ground. Best bet is to add a additional retainer like a Velcro Cable Tie to the radio or put it in a pocket. Good Radio and I suggest getting the the microphone that's offered with it so the radio stays secured All The Time.
Love these Radios, problem we were having has been resolved

We bought these radios as replacements for old (20 years at least) Motorola talkabouts that finally wore out. As our older Motorola talkabouts began to show age, a few years ago we bought some replacement walkie talkies in the lower price ranges and were VERY disappointed with the quality and range, and could not use them. So we now decided to try these higher cost Motorola Talkabouts in hopes that we could find a good replacement for our old Motorola talkabouts.
We bought a set of two in October 2016, and a 2nd set of two in November 2016. We got both sets from Amazon warehouse deals. The first set just had very little damage to the packaging and appeared to never have been opened. The 2nd set had cut open packages and had appeared to be used. But with the extended Amazon Warehouse deals, we thought we would be fine. It is now February 2017.
At first, we thought we had found a good replacement for our old Motorola Talkabouts. We liked the following features of these new walkie talkies:
--We have kids ages 9 and 12 and the learning curve to use all of the Motorola radios is easy to master for that age group.
--Very good range with our kids as they play at various homes in our neighborhood and when our family goes skiing.
--Kids liked the call feature that has both sound and vibrate.
--We liked the overall sturdiness of these radios.
--In 4 months we have liked and had no problems with the rechargeable batteries. We also like the USB connectors, they take up a lot less space than older charging bases.
--They seemed to work well in cold temperatures. We routinely used them while skiing in Michigan with 15-20 deg temperatures and had no issues except for one described below.
However, now that the extended Amazon Warehouse deals warranty (3 month warranty) has ended we now have issues with these radios. Both of these issues are with the 2nd set that we purchased. Our problems are as follows:
1. In very cold temperatures, one time, one of the radios would not stop vibrating when it was called. We tried turning it on and off and it was still vibrating, even when turned off! We ended up taking the batteries out and it finally stopped. It seemed to "reset" worked fine after the batteries were taken out and put back in. We haven't had that issue again and have been back in the cold several times. I was glad we were home when this happened and not skiing because it would have been difficult to get a screwdriver and remove the battery cover if we had been skiing.
2. Now we have another issue with one of the radios. This radio is definitely part of the 2nd set I purchased, but I am not sure if it is the same one that had the problem described in #1 above or not. When we press the Mode, Menu, "+", "-", and Mon buttons the unit does a low pitch beep and the function does not work. The only button that still works on the front is the call button (with music note symbol.) The talk buttons on the side of the unit still work. I have tried taking the batteries out and this does not resolve the issue. I have tried to read the Motorola site and there doesn't seem to be any hints as to how to resolve this issue. If anyone has any ideas, feel free to comment on this post. UPDATE: Please see comments below. We had inadvertently activated the Lockout feature as described below. Now that is turned off, the radio is now working normally again.
Right now, I am putting two stars on this purchase, because we really liked them until now. I can't send these back to Amazon, because I am just past the return window for Amazon Warehouse deals. Looks like I will need to send these back to Motorola for service. I will update this review as I go through that process.
UPDATE: July 2017---Changed my rating from 2 stars to 4 stars. Please see comments below. The problem that we were having with our radios was actually the button lockout feature that we accidentally activated. Thanks to another Amazon customer who figured out our problem and posted solution (see comments below.) All 4 walkie talkies that we own are still working wonderfully. A couple of times I have accidentally left them on the charger more than the recommended time period, but so far at least, no issues with the batteries. My kids use these heavily during the summer while playing in our neighborhood and these work great up to 5 blocks away. Next winter, back to the ski slopes and if we have any future cold weather issues, I will update this post.
