Works great on my Pelican Zenith Kayak
BobPT•July 26, 2018
The Pelican Zenith ayak was on sale at Dick's Sporting so I bought 2. Found out that these do not track very well even on a calm lake with little breeze. I purchased these skegs based on the positive reviews. They appear of good quality. I located an area of the keel towards the stern that was the least curved (nearly flat) and sanded the area with 100 grit sand paper. Then cleaned the area several times, as well as the base plate of the skeg with isopropyl alcohol to clean off all debris and finger oils. I marked off the area to place the skeg. You need to get this lined up as close to dead center straight as possible or the boat may drift a little to one side if not straightt. I applied outdoor waterproof double faced foam tape to the skeg base plate and mounted it to the surface of the kayak. Seems to holding extremely well and now the kayak tracks much straighter when paddling and barely drifts sideways when just sitting still. Highly recommend this product.
Very Durable

This is higher quality than I expected. It's pretty thick and durable, the base is sturdy yet flexible to be able to fit to shape if need be. Unfortunately I didn't realize how the hull was shaped on my Sun Dolphin Bali SS (most certainly not the same as the Journey although claims to be) so because of the shape and such I ordered another one, I'm waiting on the second before I install. My kayak is pretty terrible when it comes to tracking so I hope that once these are installed it will solve the problem. I've heard bad things about using Goop to install these but I figured since I'm going to be installing on a flat surface I'll give it a try. Ordered the deep water rivets as back up just in case! Will update once I have installed.
UPDATE: I used Goop only to attach two of these, I let it sit for several days before taking it out on the water. Took it out two days ago and these made a HUGE difference. It's so much easier to paddle and actually enjoy my kayak. It now goes completely straight without worrying about having to over correct or going sideways when I stopped paddling. Made the ride super smooth compared to when I didn't have these. However, you must remember that the downside to this is that your kayak is less maneuverable. Before, it would turn very easy, I could whip it side to side with a little more control. Now, it's not so easy to turn. I found myself having to paddle backwards if I wanted to turn quicker or correct my course. Having two (one on each side) also helps with stability. I have terrible balance I've learned since kayaking so using both helps a good bit. The only down side to these are the screw in things are a bit of a pain, I would prefer a snap in or something a little easier to put on and take off.

WORKS PERFECT ON MY DOLPHIN KAYAK! MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE!

WORKS GREAT! Tracks great now and no more 360 degree spins when I stop (a typical problem with the Dolphin Kayaks). The Dolphin Kayak doesn't have a flat enough surface for mounting and, although you can heat the mount to make it pliable, it's not enough and the marine glue recommended didn't hold. However, my husband used waterproof, 2-sided tape (usually used to mount stuff in showers) instead and it worked perfectly (just clean the area first, then skuff it up some with a steel wool pad or sandpaper before using the tape to attach). It holds beautifully! Didn't use the bolts/strap that keep the skeg in place because I wanted to be able to slid the skeg out when not in use. It fits snug enough that it doesn't come out when in use and when I'm done I can remove the skeg and slide the Kayak on shore with the mount just in the water but no sket to bend or break in sand.
Great addition to your kayak...

Great fin that keeps my kayak going faster and doesn't lose speed from one side to the other when paddling.
Its an inexpensive skeg. My kayak's tracking greatly improved.

Its an inexpensive skeg. My kayak's tracking greatly improved. I use mine on the Gulf off the Florida coast. I used marine grad loctite for underwater line. I let it cure for twenty-four hours. It sealed perfectly and it has not given me any trouble.
