and I was curious to see what a pattern-welded folder in this price range would be like. I didn’t have high expectations
Kevin ColeFebruary 27, 2018
I make knives as a hobby, and I was curious to see what a pattern-welded folder in this price range would be like. I didn't have high expectations, however I was pleasantly surprised.
PROS:
Very nice symmetry throughout, including back-filing, blade, and handle.
The pattern-welded blade appears to be the "random pattern" style, which looks very nice.
The stag handle material is nicely patterned.
The knife balances about ½ inch behind the bolster, which feels good in the hand.
The brass liners between the blade and handle material are an attractive touch.
It was very sharp out of the box.
Well finished handle edges. No sharp or rough edges to catch your pocket.
Good, thorough directions on knife care were included.
The sheath is nicely made. A little snug now, but it will break in, I think.

CONS:
The lock-back mechanism is a bit tight for my taste.
I'm a lefty, so it would have been nice to have a nail nick on both sides of the blade.

Overall, this is a great knife, even for twice the price. OK, it isn't like a certified American Bladesmith's product, but it doesn't cost $1,000 either. I'd be very comfortable giving a knife like this as a gift. It is a practical carry knife that looks like a collector knife. The blade is high-carbon steel, not stainless, so you do need to take some care with it (don't put away wet, for example). But high carbon steel won't chip or break on you as easily as stainless. Also, you can put an edge on this type of steel much more easily than on most stainless blades. But the edge doesn't last as long, generally. So there's always a tradeoff. I'd buy from these folks again.
Very nice gift for my husband!

My husband and I watch Forged in Steel so I thought this would be a great birthday gift for him. He seemed very pleased. I was disappointed that it didn't come with a sharp edge, but he said they often don't come that way. He spent some time while watching TV sharpening it and seems to really like it. There are several layers of steel visible and the pattern is very attractive. The protective oil was impressive.
Love it, ordering more for gifts.

Very nice knife, well made, hand finished. I'm very happy with the knife, and likely ordering more for gifts. The blade is very hard, it came with a great edge that cuts very well. There's no question this is real Damascus steel and every bit as hard as advertised.

If I had to say anything negative at all, it's that the finish isn't perfect, but clearly made by a skilled craftsman and beautifully done. The very minor imperfections show it was hand made and finished and greatly add to the character of the knife. Overall I'm extremely satisfied.
4.5 Star Rating. Read my review! :)

TL;DR: The knife is worth the money, I would recommend it.

Long version: I got the item today, and the first thing I want to say is, it was bigger than I initially imagined it. (Which is good btw, don't get me wrong). The weight, the feel of the blade, the look, everything is good. I don't feel like I wasted any money. The only reason I didn't give it a full 5 Star rating is because of the following reasons:

1. The blade isn't sharp enough. It's decently sharp, but not quite flawless.
- now while I know that I just need to sharpen it with a Whetstone or a sharpener, I would have expected it to be sharper than how I received it.

2. The sharpener that came with it, is rather ineffective.
- The design is basically just like a pillar you'd see at a Greek god temple, (or something like that), you know, straight cylindrical with straight groove markings, instead of a diamond pattern which is more effective.

3. The leather pouch is too tight and have to be broken in before being able to use it effectively.
- not complaining about this too much, but It's just too tight like a shoe half a size smaller.

4. I'm not entirely convinced that the blade is forged 100% Damascus style.
- I've had a Damascus blade before I lost it somewhere. And there is one thing I noticed. The sharpened part of the blade had visible patterns. This one initially does not, out of the box. Perhaps it's the way they sharpened it, as they sharpened it straight down, instead of going along the blade (which is how the wave lines appear after sharpening). So I'll have to find out after I sharpen it on a 6000 grit Whetstone or something. It definitely looks like Damascus from the outside.

5. The blade is dirty.
- now keep this is mind. The blade is coated in protective oil, and that's perfectly fine. It means they know how to take care of a blade. What I'm talking about is the black residue left over on the parts of the blade, like the same black thing you'd get on your hands after touching the chains of a used bicycle. Except in a small pile of it in places of the knife. It takes some time to clean those out, as they stain things very easily, including the stag horn handle. This one is my biggest complaint.

This is my reason why this product got 4.5 Stars from me and didn't get the full 5 Stars.

Other than that, the blade seems amazing, and I can't seem to find any other flaws. I have yet to test anything else regarding what the blade can take, but so far, it's definitely worth the buy for me!

P.S. excuse any spelling errors. Save me from the Grammar Nazi's.

This is my review of this product, thanks Best.Buy.Damascus1 (Idk how to tag you >_<)
Value marries art and function in Damascus.
W. L. HUGHESOctober 18, 2017
Can't beat the value. Exceptional craftsmanship. Exceeded expectations. Knife came packed securely double bagged in plastic with a thin coat of oil covering the blade. It is an excellent example of Damascus steel handiwork. Brass front bolster with beautiful specimen of stag-horn riveted in brass finished flush to the stag-horn and a lanyard hole in the rear that just begs for a leather tie. A sharpener, key chain and leather sheath were also included. The sheath (double cowhide stitched with a brass button) is very tight and will require some working with the leather before it can ever be used as intended carried on the belt. A little saddle soap/leather oil will do the trick...Included instructions guide the user to proper care and handling. All considered, these people care about the craft of knife-making. Accurately pictured in the add.
